This video shows how to replace the hard drive on an XPS 8950. Before you begin, power off the system and disconnect all attached peripherals. Ensure that you always use ESD protection when working inside the system.
To begin, loosen the captive screw that secures the left side cover latch. Then, pull on the latch to release the cover from the chassis. Holding the left side cover firmly on both sides, lift the left side cover from the chassis.
Place the computer on its side. To remove the hard drive: Disconnect the power and data cables from the hard drive. Press the release tabs on the hard drive carrier and slide the hard drive carrier out of the hard drive cage.
Then, release and remove the hard drive carrier from the hard drive. To install the new hard drive: Place and snap the hard drive carrier onto the hard drive.
Pinch on the release tabs and slide the hard drive carrier into the hard drive cage. Then, connect the power and data cables to the hard drive. Now, place the computer in an upright position.
Holding the left side cover firmly on both sides, place the bottom edge of the left side cover into the chassis and press the left side cover into place.
