In this video, we will show you how to replace a disk drive in an MD2460 enclosure before removing the disk drive read through and follow the safety guidelines to protect your system from potential damage and ensure your personal safety. You might need to replace a disk drive. If your system management software indicates a drive failure, the failed drives must be replaced with the approved drives. See the Dell Power World MD24 series enclosure support matrix for the list of supported drives, the disk drives are hot swappable, which means they can be replaced without powering off the enclosure.
When one disk drive is removed from an enclosure, it must be replaced within nine minutes to prevent the enclosure from overheating. When two disk drives are removed from an enclosure, they must be replaced within eight minutes to prevent the enclosure from overheating. When you open the system cover, it must be closed within 12 minutes to prevent the enclosure from overheating.
If installed, remove the front bezel, insert fingers into the two pockets on the bezels surface and pull the bezel straight away from the enclosure loosen the thumb screws and pull the enclosure from the rack loosen the two thumb screws that attach the system cover to the chassis.
Pull the system cover forward and lift it out of the enclosure. Identify the drive for replacement by the status led on the drive carrier blinking amber. Now press the release button on the failed drive to open the drive carrier release handle, wait for 30 seconds to allow the disk drive to spin down before removing the drive. Then holding the drive carrier release handle slowly pull the drive carrier out of the drive slot.
Remove the faulty drive from the drive carrier using a Phillips one screwdriver, remove the screws and lift the drive out of the carrier. Insert the replacement drive into the drive carrier with the connector end of the drive at the back, install and tighten the force crews to secure the drive to the drive carrier. Next, open the release handle and slide the drive carrier into the drive slot, close the release handle to lock the drive in place.
Verify that the activity led flashes to indicate that the spin up sequence has begun and the status led is no longer amber in your system management software. Make sure that the drive is recognized and shown as up and running. Once you have replaced the drives close the system cover position the system cover on top of the enclosure and slowly slide it back towards the rear of the enclosure until it stops, tighten the two thumb screws to secure the system cover.
Now push the enclosure all the way into the rack and tighten the thumb screws. Finally install the front Bezzel align the bezel with the enclosure, ensure that the bezel clips on each corner align with respective ball studs on the chassis.
