How to import a foreign RAID config on a Dell EMC PowerEdge Server using the System. Setup In this video you will learn how to check and import a foreign RAID config on your Dell EMC PowerEdge server. Foreign configs are present if the installed hard disk got already a RAID configuration, but this config is not present on the RAID Controller itself. If you install an HDD from another RAID System, a foreign config might be present. Here you will learn how to import this configuration. Before you begin you should backup your data as following this guide may cause a loss of data due to the situation. Enter the System Setup of your server by pressing F2 at the startup sequence. Then select "Device Settings" and select the raid controller your HDD is connected to.
Select “Configuration Management” then “Manage Foreign Configuration” and “Preview Foreign Configuration”. In this screen you will see which physical disks will be part of the imported configuration. Make sure that these are not part of any RAID currently configured on your System. You can also see which Raid configurations will be present after the import and which status they will have. Now click “Import Foreign Configuration”.
Read the displayed warning and check the confirm box. Then click Yes to import or No to cancel. Once finished you see the message “Operation has been performed successfully” Back at the main menu click “Virtual Disk Management” Check the Status of the RAID configurations.
If the newly imported raid is shown as other than ready, click the entry and select “View Associated Physical Disks” The disks should be shown as Online or Rebuilding. If so, wait for the rebuild to complete. Once this is done, the virtual disk is ready to use. If any errors are shown, please contact our technical support staff.
