Hello and welcome to a demo of a new user interface feature introduced in the PPDM 19.16 release: copy management. The copy management feature lets you query the copy catalog directly to search and apply filters across backup copies of assets in order to take actions such as editing the retention time and date of the backup, deleting a backup copy, with the potential for many other actions on multiple backup copies.
Let's log into the PPDM UI. Prior to PPDM version 19.16, to view a backup copy and perform some actions on those copies, the user had to go to the asset page and select each asset individually to view the copies for a specific asset. With this new copy management page, you can get a holistic view of all the backup copies available inside the PowerProtect Data Manager. Any user who has the privilege to view copies on the infrastructure assets page also has permissions to access copy management. To see what this looks like, select Infrastructure, then click Copy Management to list all of the backup copies available in this PPDM server.
There are three main actions you can perform on backup copies: namely, edit retention, remove from PowerProtect, and delete. Select one or more copies to edit the copy retention period, to remove the copy from the PowerProtect database, or to delete the copy from storage. Remove from PowerProtect should only be used if you are unable to delete the copy from the storage system using the delete option.
By default, you can view all the copies available. You can also select one or more copies and click Selected Copies. While copies are selected, you can switch between the two views: All Copies (the default view) and Selected Copies, which displays only the asset copies that you have selected. By selecting a specific row, you can display the details of the copy that is displayed. Again, you can perform various actions on the backup copies you've selected, such as edit retention, remove the copies from PPDM, or delete the copies from storage.
You can sort the table entries by asset name, copy status, and so on, or click the gear icon to add other columns to the table, such as retention date and time and storage unit name. To locate one or more specific copies of a protected asset from a list of all available asset copies, use the advanced search and filter functionality available on the right side of the page.
Use the search bar to search for assets by asset name or copy type. Here I am searching for copies with the asset name ""Raj."" Also, to search for all copies whose copy type is ""log,"" enter ""log"" in the search field.
When the All Copies view is enabled, you can also apply filters in the right pane to narrow the copy search criteria. There are five categories of filters available. For creation date and time, select the ""Between,"" ""Before,"" or ""After"" filter and specify a creation date and time range, or leave the default ""All"" to view all available copies in the system.
For retention date, you can edit the retention period of one or more asset copies to extend or shorten the amount of time that asset copies are retained. Select the ""Between,"" ""Before,"" or ""After"" filter and specify a retention date and time range, or leave the default ""All"" to view all available copies in the system. Here, we select ""After,"" then specify the date and the time of day.
For asset filters, select an asset type and then click ""Select Assets"" and select ""Policy"" to open a window that displays only the assets and policies for that asset type. You can then select individual assets and policies to return the search results only for those selections listed on this page.
Under Copy Filters, you can filter copies by copy stage, copy status, copy type, and size. After clicking ""Apply,"" we find that none of the copies match our filter criteria. We can then go back and change our filtering and display our results.
Under Location Filters, click ""Select Protection Storage"" to choose a protection storage system, then click ""Select Storage Unit"" to choose one or more storage units within that storage system. When a filter is enabled, the filter icon displays next to the category, and the name of the applied filter appears above the list view of copies. Clicking ""Clear Filters"" on any of the categories within this pane resets the filter.
To sum up, by using the copy management feature, the user can get a holistic view of all the backup copies present in the PPDM server. It also allows the user to manage the copies from a single pane of glass without having to navigate to multiple UI pages. Thanks for watching.
