In this video, we show how to replace a heat sink and processor in a PowerEdge R770. Before removing a heat sink and processor, read through and follow the safety guidelines to protect your system from potential damage and ensure your personal safety. In order to remove a heat sink and processor, you first need to remove the cover and right or left air shroud, depending on which processor socket you need access to. In this video, we demonstrate on Socket 1. To remove the cover, rotate the lock counterclockwise to unlock it, lift the latch to release the cover, then remove it from the system.
To remove the right air shroud, disconnect and unroute any Gray cables. Pull back on the retention clip and lift the shroud out of the system. To remove a heat sink, loosen the first nut three turns, then loosen the one diagonally opposite followed by the other two, then return to the first one to completely loosen it.
Next, set the anti tilt wires to the unlocked position, then lift the heat sink out of the system. To remove the processor from the heat sink, lift the lever to release it from the thermal interface material and remove the processor. Be sure to clean off any old thermal compound before continuing.
To install the heat sink on the processor. Using pin one as a guide, align and place the retaining clip on the processor. Apply the thermal paste to the heat sink in a spiral. Then place the heat sink on the processor and press to lock the retaining clip to all four corners. To install the heat sink, align and lower into the system. Then set the anti tilt wires to the lock position. Tighten the first nut three turns, then the one diagonally opposite, followed by the other two, and return to the first one to completely tighten it.
To install the right air shroud, align and lower it into the system, then route and connect any Gray cables. To install the cover, align and place it on the system.
