In this video, we will demonstrate how to use the Dell BIOSConnect feature to start SupportAssist OS Recovery. BIOSConnect is a feature provisioned in Dell computers for the system recovery process.
When a computer fails to boot to the main operating system and the local recovery operating system, BIOSConnect helps in the recovery process by connecting to the Dell server over the Internet and downloading the SupportAssist OS Recovery image.
The recovery environment enables you to diagnose hardware issues, repair your computer, back up your files, or restore your computer to its factory state.
A BIOSConnect-enabled computer launches BIOSConnect automatically after identifying the predefined times of boot failure. You can also launch BIOSConnect by pressing "F12" and selecting the "SupportAssist OS Recovery" option in the BIOS launchpad.
When your computer is unable to boot to the operating system even after repeated attempts, the Pre-Boot System Performance Check is initiated. The system scans for hardware issues.
If no hardware issue is detected by the performance check, and your computer is unable to start SupportAssist OS Recovery from the hard drive, you are prompted to restart your system, and download the SupportAssist OS Recovery image from Dell.com.
Now, click "Continue". The system restarts and BIOSConnect is launched. BIOSConnect discovers how the computer’s connected to the Internet.
If a wired connection is detected, BIOSConnect proceeds to download the SupportAssist OS Recovery image from Dell.com. Otherwise, a list of available wireless networks is displayed.
In this video, we’ll use a wireless network connection. Click "Refresh" to detect any new wireless networks. Select your preferred wireless network from the list, enter the password, and click "Connect". Once the network connection is established, click "Start Recovery".
The service operating system or SOS image starts downloading from the Dell server to your system. and may take several minutes to complete depending on your network speed. Once the image download is complete, the "SupportAssist OS Recovery" homepage is displayed.
Here, click "Restore System". Depending on the state of your computer, the following options may be available. Local Restore. Use this option to restore the operating system and default applications to the state they were in when your computer was shipped from the Dell factory. And "Cloud Restore".
Use this option to download and install a new operating system on your computer, along with the critical drivers and applications. For more information, see the Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery manual at dell.com/support.
