Dell Data Protection | Enterprise Edition for Mac. Recovery of a DDP|EE for Mac client. Introduction: Sometimes, access is needed to a user's encrypted data.
There are different recovery procedures described in the DDP|EE for Mac Administrator Guide based on scenario. If moving a user's encrypted data to a different Mac as part of a hardware refresh, use the "Accept New System Configuration" procedure.
If an operating system fault causes the system volume to no longer boot, use the "Mount Volume" procedure. This tutorial will focus on the "Mount Volume" procedure.
Refer to the product documentation for complete details and best practices. Prerequisites. To complete this procedure you will need: An unencrypted external recovery volume or computer to run the recovery utility.
A FireWire or Thunderbolt cable, depending on your hardware. The Device ID/Unique ID of the computer targeted for recovery. The DDP|EE installation media.
Server-Side Steps. First, you need to obtain the recovery bundle for the failed machine. As a Dell administrator, log on to the Remote Management Console.
In the left navigation, under "Actions", click "Recover Endpoint". Select the "Endpoint Type" as "Mac" from the dropdown menu, and enter the unique ID. Click "Download".
Click "Save" to put the recovery bundle on the external volume or computer that will be running the recovery utility. Client-Side Steps. Boot the target computer.
Press and hold the "Option" key while restarting the computer to access the "Startup Disk" pane. If you have a pre-created external recovery volume attached, select it for booting.
If you are using a second recovery computer, click "Target Disk Mode...". Note: You may also press and hold the "D" key while restarting to jump directly to Target Disk Mode.
This demonstration will assume using Target Disk Mode and a FireWire cable connection. Connect the Target to the Host. The target computer will be started in Target Disk Mode.
The host computer is where you should have the recovery bundle and the installation media .DMG file. Connect the target computer to the recovery computer with the hardwired cable: FireWire or Thunderbolt.
Installing and Using the Dell Recovery Utility. On the recovery computer, mount the Dell-Data-Protection .DMG file, your installation media. Navigate to the "Utilities" folder in the mounted .DMG. Launch the Dell Recovery Utility.
You may need to enter an Administrator password. A message displays stating: "Needs Install: Recovery needs to install". Click "Install". The Dell Recovery Utility "Select Volumes" dialog displays. Select the Recovery Option.
Select the volume or drive that needs recovery and click "Continue". The File Selector window displays. Select the recovery bundle saved earlier in the procedure and click "Open".
Select the "Mount Volume" option and click "Confirm". If successful, you should be able to interact with all the files on the mounted volume as needed to complete the repairs.
Data on the volume will be encrypted and decrypted transparently as files are transferred between the volumes. This concludes the tutorial on recovery for Enterprise Edition for Mac using a mounted volume.
