Before you begin, turn off the computer, disconnect all the attached peripherals, remove any SD card installed in the SD card slot on your computer, and enter Service Mode. To enter Service Mode, press and hold the "B" key on the keyboard and then press the Power button.
Now the computer will boot up and the Owner Tag information is displayed on the screen. Press any key to proceed. The computer will emit three short beeps and shut down. Ensure that you always use ESD protection when working inside the computer.
To begin, loosen the two captive screws that secure the base cover to the palm rest and keyboard assembly. Then, remove the seven screws that also secure the base cover to the palm rest and keyboard assembly. Pry the base cover from the top left corner and then continue to work on the sides to open the base cover.
Finally, lift the base cover off the palm rest and keyboard assembly. Remove the screw that secures the M.2 2230 solid-state drive to the solid-state drive bracket, and then slide and lift the M.2 2230 solid-state drive from the M.2 card slot on the system board.
You've successfully removed the M.2 2230 solid-state drive. To replace the M.2 2230 solid-state drive with an M.2 2280 solid-state drive, slide and remove the solid-state drive mounting bracket from the mounting bracket slot on the palm rest and keyboard assembly. Rotate the solid-state drive mounting bracket 180 degrees.
Then, slide the solid-state mounting bracket into the mounting slot on the palm rest and keyboard assembly. Align the notch on the solid-state drive with the tab on the solid-state drive slot, and slide the M.2 2280 solid-state drive at an angle to the slot on the system board.
Then, replace the screw that secures the M.2 2280 solid-state drive to the solid-state drive bracket. You've successfully replaced the M.2 2230 solid-state drive with an M.2 2280 solid-state drive. Reinstall the base cover by aligning and placing the base cover on the palm rest and keyboard assembly.
Press the edges and sides of the base cover until it snaps into place. Then, tighten the two captive screws, and replace the seven screws the secure the base cover to the palm rest and keyboard assembly. You've successfully replaced the M.2 2280 solid-state drive.
Connect the power adapter and press the Power button to power on the computer, and exit from Service Mode. Note, the computer will only turn on if the power adapter is connected. If you need more information or assistance, go to Dell.com/Support.
