Welcome to the Dell EMC
unity XT crew removal and replacement series. In this series of short videos, we're gonna use Unisphere and UEM cli commands to identify faulted custom replaceable units on a Dell E MC unity XT storage system.
We'll then look at the ways to prepare the system for service, including service mode and reset and hold modes will demonstrate the removal and replacement of the faulted crew and finally verify the replacement crew is working correctly. One of the first things you want to do is to log on to the storage system using the Unisphere interface.
This requires that you have initialized the system and provided an IP address in your browser. And once you do that, you're gonna be brought to the page that you see here, you're gonna have to have a user name along with a password. That combination was uh also set up during the initialization process.
And once you provide those correct credentials, we'll be able to log in and view the dashboard page. We see the dashboard page here and from the system health, we see we have a uh hardware error, we have other errors uh uh as well, what we're concerned with the uh hardware error at this particular point.
So we're gonna go to the alerts page and see what types of alerts were generated for this particular error. And we can see uh the date and time of the uh error and the alert was generated. And we see we have a uh failure of a uh SFP. So if I click on that particular alert, I'll get additional information in the right hand side. Tell us a bit more about that, uh that failure.
Now, I can go ahead and uh validate that through the logs as well. And you always look for the same date and time of what uh that particular error. And I can, I can see it here. Uh It logged it uh at the same time. So we can see the SFP uh has, has a failure and it's a uh on a fiber channel port and it really wouldn't matter at all. Replace an SFP is the same anywhere.
So we're gonna click on the blue text here uh from the uh enclosures page. And we're gonna take a look at the, uh the failed part. And again, it wouldn't matter if it's a port. Uh what port it is an SFP is, is replaced in the same man. You want cable it and pull it out and uh replace it with a new one and that's what we're gonna do here. So if we go to the service task page.
Uh We're gonna see that we in fact, uh have an error logged up at the top. The storage system has logged that error, a major issue. But the storage processes themselves are, are in a healthy state. So we're gonna remove the SFP. And, and of course, at this point, you don't want to remove the whole aisle module. And if you do, you're gonna cause that whole storage processor to reboot.
So only remove the SFP. So in this example is simply uh taking out the fiber channel cable where uh there's a, a small latch, you grab that latch, you pull the SFP out and then you align the new one in the slot and push it on and you feel a little uh click as you push it in and rec cable up your fiber channel cable, you think go to uh unsphere and look at the system view and ensure the port has uh come to life.
It looks good and uh it's as easy as that and that's how you replace a SFP in a uni XT storage system.
