Learn the steps for replacing drives in your system. Follow safety guidelines, power off, and remove the cover. Discover how to remove and install drives in the drive carrier securely. Ensure proper torquing of screws and maintain system cooling with drive blanks when necessary.
Prerequisites
Follow the safety guidelines listed in the Safety instructions.
Power off the system and all attached peripherals.
Disconnect the system from the electrical outlet and disconnect the peripherals.
If applicable, remove the system from the rack.
Remove the system cover.
Remove the drive carrier:
Press the release button to open the drive carrier release handle.
Holding the drive carrier release handle, slide the drive carrier out of the drive slot.
NOTE: If you are not replacing the drive immediately, install a drive blank in the empty drive slot to maintain proper system cooling.
Removing the drive from the drive carrier:
Using a Phillips #1 screwdriver, remove the screws from the slide rails on the drive carrier.
NOTE: If the drive carrier has Torx screw, use Torx 6 (for 2.5-inch drive) or Torx 8 (for 3.5-inch drive) screwdriver to remove the drive.
Lift the drive out of the drive carrier.
Installing the drive into the drive carrier:
Insert the drive into the drive carrier with the drive connector facing towards the rear of the carrier.
Align the screw holes on the drive with the screws holes on the drive carrier.
Using a Phillips #1 screwdriver, secure the drive to the drive carrier with the screws.
NOTE: When installing a drive into the drive carrier, ensure that the screws are torqued to 4 in-lbs.
NOTE: If the drive carrier has Torx screw, use Torx 6 (for 2.5-inch drive) or Torx 8 (for 3.5-inch drive) screwdriver to install the drive.
Installing the drive carrier:
Slide the drive carrier into the drive slot and push until the drive connects with the backplane.
Close the drive carrier release handle to lock the drive in place.
Replace the system cover.
If applicable, install the system into the rack.
Reconnect the peripherals and connect the system to the electrical outlet, and then power on the system.
