Welcome to Dell Technologies AppSync 4 — How-to Series.
Creating SAP HANA copies with AppSync. Reference Dell Knowledge Article No. 189180. This video was created to: Showcase how easy copy-management is with AppSync and SAP HANA integration. It shows how a service plan is created and run and how copies are easily utilized for varying business use cases.
This video presents the following: Creating an SAP HANA Service Plan in AppSync. Subscribing an SAP HANA system to the service plan. Creating an application consistent SAP HANA copy. Mounting the copy to a mount host, unmounting it, and expiring it.
When to do this: Many customers use AppSync to automate the creation of copies. End users don’t need to understand storage, scripts or SAP HANA with AppSync.
These copies can be mounted for reporting, backups, testing, etc. Copies can also be scheduled. This is the main AppSync dashboard. Click “Copy Management” and then select “Copies”, “Service Plan” and then “Select Application” and “SAP HANA”. Next, click “CREATE SERVICE PLAN” and “SELECT TEMPLATE”. Then select “Bronze” and click “OK” to use as a template.
Next, the service plan is given a name and the user decides on the mount copy option and retention policy. The “NEXT” button is clicked to proceed when options are chosen. “NEXT” will be clicked again since no changes are being made on the “Create the Copy” page.
Notice that if the user hovers over the “i” tool tips, they can get more information about the options. The same is true for the Scripts section. Just click “NEXT” to continue. The “Schedule/Run” page of the Service Plan Wizard allows the user to set up scheduling or run on demand and “NEXT” is clicked. Lastly, the settings are reviewed and “FINISH” is clicked to create the SAP HANA Service Plan.
If we highlight the newly created service plan you will notice details are populated in the right-side pane. Next, the new SAP HANA Service Plan will be subscribed to the SAP HANA system. Click “Service Plan”, “Copies” and “SAP HANA”. Next, select the UFS HANA system and click “CREATE COPY WITH PLAN”.
This will subscribe it to the service plan that was just created. In the wizard, we will leave Data Protection selected, since we want to create a copy with a service plan. Click “SELECT” and choose the Bronze_SAP_HANA Service Plan and click “OK”. Now click “NEXT” and “FINISH” to subscribe, run and create the copy. Now, AppSync will automatically create the application consistent copy of the SAP HANA system.
By expanding the details, we can view the various phases of the service plan run. The service plan has now finished, and the copy has been created. You can see the “Completed” status at the bottom.
The window can now be closed by clicking the “CLOSE” button. Now, we click into the UFS SAP HANA system. We can see the copy we just created. By selecting the copy, we can see more information about it on the right-side pane. By checking the box next to the copy and clicking “MOUNT” we can mount the copy to a host.
We then click “NEXT” on the first part of the wizard. Now, we have different Mount Operation options. In this case, we will just mount the copy and not do any recovery. The “Mount on standalone server” must also be chosen from the Mount on Server dropdown box. You can again hover over the information tool tips to get more information on the options available. Click “NEXT” to continue.
The last screen of the wizard allows the user to review their settings and click “FINISH” when ready to mount the copy. The Mount operation will now run. The user can expand the details to review the different steps in the process.
You can tell the mount is completed by the “Mount copy completed successfully” status. The window can now be closed by clicking the “CLOSE” button. Here, we can see that for this specific copy, the Mount Status is now “Mounted”. Notice the copy details on the right-side pane.
If we check the box next to the copy we can now click on “MOUNT” to unmount the copy from the mount host. Click “OK” to start the process and watch the status. Once the status shows “Copy unmount completed successfully” you can click the “CLOSE” button. Now, if we refresh the copy’s menu, the Mount Status will change to “Not Mounted” as shown.
The user can select the copy again and choose the “Expire” option from the “MORE” dropdown button. This will delete the copy from AppSync and the array. Click “OK” to start the process.
You will now notice that the copy has been expired and therefore no longer shown in the AppSync Copies page. You can see from this video how easy it is to create and manage copies for SAP HANA with AppSync. Please reference the following for more information.
