In this video we show how to replace the backplane on a PowerEdge R660xs. Before removing the backplane, read through and follow the safety guidelines to protect your system from potential damage and ensure your personal safety.
For more information about safety guidelines, see the R660xs Service Manual at: Dell.com/support In order to remove the backplane, you must first remove the cover, drive backplane cover. PERC module, and any installed drives. To remove the cover, use a screwdriver to rotate the lock counterclockwise to the unlocked position. Next lift the release latch until the system cover slides back.
Then lift the cover from the system. To remove the drive backplane cover, slide it toward the rear and lift it away from the system. To remove the PERC module, loosen the thumbscrews securing it in place. Pull toward the front and lift it out of the system. Then disconnect the data cable from the module.
To remove a hard drive, press the release button, holding the release handle, slide it out of the drive slot. To remove the backplane, disconnect the power cable. Press the blue release tabs to disengage it from the system, then lift it out of the system To install the backplane, align it with the hooks on the system.
Insert and lower until the tabs click into place. Then reconnect the power cable. To install a hard drive, slide it into the drive slot. Then close the release handle to lock it in place. To install the PERC module, connect the data cable. Place it in the slot and slide toward the rear of the system.
Then tighten the thumbscrews to secure it in place. To install the drive backplane cover, align and lower it into the system and then slide it toward the front of the system.
To install the cover, align the system cover with the guide slots on the system and place it one the system. Next, close the system cover release latch. Finally, using a screwdriver, rotate the lock clockwise to the lock position. For more information or support visit Dell.com/Support.
