Prerequisites
CAUTION: Many repairs may only be done by a certified service technician. You should only perform troubleshooting and simple repairs as authorized in your product documentation, or as directed by the online or telephone service and support team. Damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Dell is not covered by your warranty. Read and follow the safety instructions that came with the product.
CAUTION: If you are using the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) with an encryption key, you may be prompted to create a recovery key during program or System Setup. Be sure to create and safely store this recovery key. If you replace this system board, you must supply the recovery key when you restart your system or program before you can access the encrypted data on your hard drives.
CAUTION: Do not attempt to remove the TPM plug-in module from the motherboard. Once the TPM plug-in module is installed, it is cryptographically bound to that specific motherboard. Any attempt to remove an installed TPM plug-in module breaks the cryptographic binding, and it cannot be re-installed or installed on another motherboard.
Ensure that you read the Safety instructions.
Follow the procedure listed in Before working inside your system .
Turn off the system, including any attached peripherals.
Disconnect the system from the electrical outlet and disconnect the peripherals.
If installed, remove the front bezel. For more information, see Removing the front bezel .
Remove the system cover.
Remove the following:
cooling shroud
cooling-fan assembly
hard-drive tray (if installed)
power supply unit(s)
all expansion-card risers
integrated storage controller card
internal dual SD module
internal USB key (if installed)
PCIe card holder
cable retention bracket
heat sink(s)/heat-sink blank(s)
processors(s)/processor blank(s)
CAUTION: To prevent damage to the processor pins when replacing a faulty system board, ensure that you cover the processor socket with the processor protective cap.
memory modules and memory module blanks
network daughter card
Removing the system board:
Disconnect the mini SAS cable from the system board.
Disconnect all cables from the system board.
CAUTION: Take care not to damage the system identification button while removing the system board from the chassis.
CAUTION: Do not lift the system board by holding a memory module, processor, or other components.
Hold the system-board holder, lift the blue release pin, lift the system board and slide it toward the front of the chassis. Sliding the system board toward the front of the chassis disengages the connectors from the back of the chassis slots.
Lift the system board out of the chassis.
Installing the system board:
Unpack the new system board assembly.
CAUTION: Do not lift the system board by holding a memory module, processor, or other components.
CAUTION: Take care not to damage the system identification button while placing the system board into the chassis.
Hold the touch points and lower the system board into the chassis.
Push the system board toward the back of the chassis until the board clicks into place.
Install the Trusted Platform Module (TPM). For information about how to install TPM, see Installing the Trusted Platform Module . For more information about TPM, see Trusted Platform Module .
NOTE: The TPM plug-in module is attached to the motherboard and cannot be removed. A replacement TPM plug-in module is provided for all motherboard replacements where a TPM plug-in module was installed.
Replace the following:
Cable retention bracket
PCIe card holder
Hard-drive tray (if applicable)
Integrated storage controller card
Internal USB key (if applicable)
Internal dual SD module
All expansion-card risers
Heat sink(s)/heat-sink blank(s) and processors(s)/processor blank(s)
Memory modules and memory module blanks
Network daughter card
Cooling-fan assembly
Cooling shroud
Power supply unit(s)
Reconnect all cables to the system board.
Follow the procedure listed in After working inside your system .
Import your new or existing iDRAC Enterprise license. For more information, see Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller User's Guide , at Dell.com/esmmanuals.
Ensure that you:
Use the Easy Restore feature to restore the Service Tag. For more information, see Restoring the Service Tag using Easy Restore .
If the Service Tag is not backed up in the backup flash device, enter the system Service Tag manually. For more information, see Entering the system Service Tag using System Setup.
Update the BIOS and iDRAC versions.
Re-enable the Trusted Platform Module (TPM). For more information, see Re-enabling the TPM for TXT users .
