Prioritize safety. Remove expansion card risers and replace the system battery. Follow proper procedures to ensure FCC compliance and system integrity.
Prerequisites Follow the safety guidelines listed in the Safety instructions. Power off the system and all attached peripherals. Disconnect the system from the electrical outlet and disconnect the peripherals. If applicable, remove the system from the rack. Remove the system cover. If applicable, disconnect the power or data cables from the expansion cards.
Remove the expansion card risers: Loosen the captive screws on the riser and system. Press the blue release tab or blue button on the riser and holding the edges lift the expansion card riser from the riser connector on the system board. NOTE: The numbers on the image do not depict the exact steps. The numbers are for representation of sequence. If the risers are not going to be replaced, install riser blanks, and if required tighten the captive screws. NOTE: You must install a filler bracket over an empty expansion card slot to maintain Federal Communications Commission (FCC) certification of the system. The brackets also keep dust and dirt out of the system and aid in proper cooling and airflow inside the system.
Replacing the system battery: To remove the battery: Use a plastic scribe to pry out the system battery.
To install a new system battery: Hold the battery with the positive side facing up and slide it under the securing tabs. Press the battery into the connector until it snaps into place.
Installing the expansion card risers: If installed, remove the riser blanks and if required loosen the captive screws. NOTE: Store the riser blanks for future use. Filler brackets must be installed in empty expansion card slots to maintain Federal Communications Commission (FCC) certification of the system. The brackets also keep dust and dirt out of the system and aid in proper cooling and airflow inside the system. Holding the edges or the touch points, align the holes on the expansion card riser with the guides on the system board. Lower the expansion card riser into place and press the touch points until the expansion card riser connector is fully seated on the system board connector. Tighten the captive screws on the risers and system if any.
If applicable, connect the cables to one or more expansion cards. Replace the system cover. If applicable, install the system into the rack. Reconnect the peripherals and connect the system to the electrical outlet, and then power on the system. Confirm that the battery is operating properly, by performing the following steps: Enter the System Setup, while booting, by pressing F2. Enter the correct time and date in the System Setup Time and Date fields. Exit the System Setup. To test the newly installed battery, check the time and date at least an hour after installing the battery. Enter the System Setup and if the time and date are still incorrect, see Getting help section.
