Hello and welcome to this Dell Power Protect Data Manager appliance video. In it, we will show how to upgrade the appliance to a newer version. The Dell Power Protect Data Manager appliance is a complete hardware and software data protection solution with integrated deduplication and replication functionality. The appliance also provides cloud optimization with integrated cloud tiering.
Initial configuration is quick and easy. The appliance provides a single user interface with built-in alerts, health monitoring, telemetry, and reporting, and has been designed with the end-user in mind with ease of use. The appliance also includes flexible and reliable upgrades.
It supports new modern workloads and a single license model based on back-end usable capacity from 12 terabytes to 96 terabytes in 12-terabyte increments. Now, let's get into the demo of the Power Protect Data Manager appliance's upgrade process. Open a Google Chrome browser and log into the Power Protect Data Manager appliance. After logging in and before you start the upgrade, make sure that the system is in a healthy state to ensure the success of the upgrade.
There should be some protection jobs scheduled, at least one asset source enabled, and some protection copies which could be restored after the upgrade. For example, after selecting restore, we see that there are three types of assets protected in this appliance prior to the upgrade: virtual machine, file system, and NAS.
The appliance is now ready to be upgraded. In the left menu bar, select Administration and Updates to display the Update Wizard. Click the Update History tab. Here we can see that no upgrades have been performed on this appliance. Select the Update tab again and click Upload Update Package to browse to the update package that you've previously downloaded from the Dell Technologies support site.
Select the update package and click Upload. When the upload is complete, close the pop-up window. Now you are back in the Update Wizard. Here, you can see that the validation of the update package is in progress. This operation may take about 10 minutes to complete.
The validation process is now complete, and the upgrade package is ready to be updated as indicated by the green checkmark. Select the package, then click Update. On the End User License Agreement page, click Accept. On the Precheck page, click Show Details to see the progress of this step. When the precheck is complete, click Next. The summary page provides a few important notes about the upgrade process. After reading them, click Update.
The upgrade process starts and takes approximately three hours to complete. During this process, you can click Show Details to monitor the progress as the appliance's components are upgraded. When the progress bar shows that the upgrade is complete, click Finish.
The appliance's dashboard displays. Notice the important banner at the top. After performing a successful upgrade of the appliance, the admin must create an integrated iDRAC user to enable remote system management. But first, let's verify that the upgrade was successful. Select Administration, then Updates. The Update Wizard appears. When we click the Update History tab, we can see that the status is installed and we can examine the upgrade details. Back on the dashboard page, to begin the required task of configuring iDRAC, in the banner at the top, click Configure iDRAC to display the System Configuration Wizard.
The upgrade process has retained all the appliance's original system configuration details. Review the details on each page and click Next. When you reach the iDRAC page, the iDRAC configuration details appear. Read the details, configure a read-only user, then click Next. On the summary page, select the prerequisite steps completed checkbox, click Apply. The iDRAC configuration process starts. This may take a few minutes. Click Show Details to see the progress. Click Finish to complete the configuration.
To see that the iDRAC user is successfully configured on the appliance's dashboard, select Settings, System Configuration. On the iDRAC page, click Access Control, which takes us to the Access Control page where we click the iDRAC tab to see the details.
