In this video, we show how to replace the solid state drive, or SSD, in a Vostro 14 3440. Before you begin, create a recovery drive and back up all data. Be sure that you always use ESD protection when working inside the computer. Turn off the computer and disconnect all attached peripherals.
Then, to enter Service Mode, press and hold the B key on the keyboard, and press the power button. Now, the computer will boot up and the Owner Tag information is displayed. Press any key to proceed, the computer will emit three short beeps and shut down. To begin, loosen the two captive screws and then remove the six screws that secure the base cover to the palm rest and keyboard assembly.
Next, use a plastic scribe to pry open the base cover starting from the recesses near the hinges. Continue prying along the other sides to release the base cover and remove it Remove the screw that secures the SSD bracket to the palm rest and keyboard assembly.
Slide and remove the SSD bracket, along with the SSD, from its slot on the system board. Now, let's remove the SSD from the bracket. Turn the SSD bracket over. Remove the screw that secures the SSD to the bracket. Then, lift the SSD off the bracket. To install the SSD, first align the round notch on the SSD with the screw hole on the SSD bracket.
Replace the screw to secure the SSD to the bracket. Next, turn the bracket over. Align the notch on the SSD with the tab on the M.2 slot on the system board and slide it in at an angle. Finally, replace the screw that secures the SSD bracket to the palm rest and keyboard assembly. Align the base cover with the palm rest and keyboard assembly and snap it into place.
Replace the six screws and then tighten the two captive screws to secure the base cover to the palm rest and keyboard assembly. Once the computer is fully assembled, connect the power adapter Press the power button to turn on the computer and exit Service Mode.
