Performance PCs

The power of a performance PC

When you’re running advanced simulations, building 3D models, or analyzing massive data sets, only a high-performance PC can deliver the computer power these processing-intensive workloads require. With the right high-performance business computer, you can quickly power through workloads that would create bottlenecks and delays with other devices.

Dell offers several product lines designed for users who need more performance and reliability from their PC. Built to handle the most demanding applications, Dell performance PCs provide the reliability, functionality and style that have made Dell an innovator in business computing technology.

What makes a performance PC?

A performance PC is built with several components that distinguish it from standard desktop devices.

Fast processors

The central processing unit, or CPU, is the brain of the computer and the component responsible for millions of calculations per second. Performance PCs are equipped with the latest generation processors with higher clock speeds and multiple cores that allow multiple applications to run simultaneously or single applications to run faster.

For single-threaded applications, you would want the higher clock speeds. For multi-threaded applications, where processes are run simultaneously, then more cores are prioritized.

From Intel(r) Core i3 to i9 and even Xeon(tm) processors (AMD processors are also available on select systems), you can customize the desired performance for the applications you run most.

RAM
Random Access Memory, or RAM, allows the computer to temporarily store data required for processing. More RAM and faster RAM speeds in performance PCs can help prevent bottlenecks by delivering data as quickly as the CPU requires it. RAM is really important when you are running business applications simultaneously. Workstations are available with Error Correcting Code (ECC) memory, which adds a layer of reliability by identifying and fixing single bit memory errors.

Dell Precision workstations provide Reliable Memory Technology Pro, which works with ECC memory, to quarantine bad memory sectors and reduce memory related errors. RMT Pro will also alert the user when memory needs replaced to help avoid downtime.

Fast storage
A performance PC requires fast access to stored data, and a solid-state drive (SSD) can deliver data much faster than a traditional hard disk drive (HDD). Whereas HDD speeds are measured in revolutions per minute, SSDs are on an entirely different level. SSDs have no moving parts, so their speed is not measured in rpm.

Graphic cards
Graphic-intensive applications will run faster and render 3D graphics more easily with a dedicated graphics card, or GPU. Graphics cards vary widely in performance – it’s wise to find the right graphics card to fit the applications you run most.

The latest GPUs have Ray Tracing and Tensor cores, which help build lighting effects for realistic graphics and deliver great machine learning or AI training capabilities, respectively.

Housing, cooling, and power
A performance PC will require significant power to keep everything running, a case with optimal airflow and a cooling system to prevent components from overheating.

Precision workstations have Advanced Thermal Designs that help them stay cool and run quietly while running at higher speeds, for longer.
