Menzies Aviation protects its customers from disruption

Long before we built the first aeroplane, we dreamt of flight. In Greek myth, Icarus flew too close to the sun with wings made of feathers and wax. In the 1400s, Leonardo studied birds and designed flying machines. And, centuries later, Bill Gates described the aeroplane as, “the first World Wide Web, bringing people, languages, ideas and values together.”

With a great deal of innovation and sophisticated technology – and a vast supporting infrastructure – we’ve made flight a part of everyday life. Menzies Aviation is one of the companies that make this possible – delivering passenger, ramp and cargo-handling services for around 500 airlines and supporting more than 700,000 passenger flights a year.

Menzies Aviation succeeds because it focuses on innovation, consistency and reliability – especially in its IT infrastructure. So when it comes to system up time, nothing less than 99.999 per cent will do. That’s why the aviation specialist worked with Dell to swap its silo-based environment for a virtualized one, using Dell PowerEdge servers with and VMware® server software. After a proof-of-concept at the Dell Solution Centre in Ireland, Dell and Menzies set up a virtualized platform with no single point of failure, mirrored across two sites to give a second line of defence against downtime.

The result? A resilient platform that makes server deployment four times faster, and protects the availability of crucial systems such as airline messaging – systems that help make the connecting power of flight a global reality.
