Dell acknowledged for engineering excellence

Last week we received news that the editors of R&D Magazine selected the Dell PowerEdge R810 server as one of the winners of its 49th Annual R&D 100 Awards, which salutes the 100 most technologically significant products introduced during the past year.

This prestigious award highlights Dell’s overall engineering excellence, unique intellectual property and innovative approach to addressing technology challenges such as FlexMem Bridge technology. What sets this server apart, is its computing density (4-sockets in a 2U form factor) and raw computational power which delivers double the memory capacity at 512GB and double the processing power of any previous generation 4-socket, 4U server. The PowerEdge R810 acts like a “Swiss army knife” for customers looking to consolidate server hardware through virtualization and deploy email messaging and database applications.

The FlexMem Bridge technology goes to the heart of the systems density and power. The beauty of this technology is that it solves customers’ memory-bottleneck issues and rack-density concerns by allowing them to stay in the same software license cost scheme and get 32 DIMMs with two processors in a slim 2U form factor. When the customer is ready for 4 processors, they simply replace the FlexMem Bridge with new processors and instantly double processor performance—all without taking up additional space!

Dell is also offering the exact same architecture in the PowerEdge M910 blade. The exact same technology and benefits in a blade form factor. These server innovations are resonating with customers while helping Dell gain market share. We’ve grown our 4-socket rack unit share by 9.3 pts in Q4, 2010, a 10 year high for Dell, according to IDC.

The R&D 100 Awards have long been a benchmark of excellence for industry sectors as diverse as information technology, high-energy physics, software, manufacturing, and biotechnology. Dell is honored to be listed along side of this country’s best R&D industry leaders including government labs, and academic institutions. Winners will be recognized at the R&D 100 Awards Banquet on Oct. 13, 2011, in Orlando, Fla. A list of winning innovations is on the R&D 100 Awards website, www.rdmag.com.
