Climate Savers Computing Initiative

Today, we were part of the launch a new industry coalition called Climate Savers Computing Initiative. Dell will be one of the leaders of this group which will drive energy-savings measures for desktop and notebook computers as well as servers. Intel, Google, EDS, EPA, HP, IBM, Lenovo, Microsoft and the World Wildlife Fund are all part of this initiative. Together, the group has set targets for efficiency of power supplies and motherboards, as well as power-management targets.

Update 6/13: Bill Weihl, Google’s Green Energy Czar (man, they have cool titles) has a good blog entry about this initiative over at the Google Blog.

This is significant for a couple of reasons:

  • Our industry recognizes that more needs to be done to provide customers with computing gear in the data center that delivers the maximum performance for the least amount of power and cooling required.
  • Power management—especially for desktop and notebook computing— is now being recognized as an impactful way to lower energy consumption.

Dell will continue to innovate within our own product lines and through industry partnerships to deliver products that go beyond required minimums to deliver the cost and energy savings customers need. Today, our Energy Smart servers offer the best performance per watt in the data center, and our Energy Smart systems including desktops, notebooks and workstations are equipped with power management settings enabled, right out of the box. You can see some of the latest info, and access our energy calculators and data center capacity planner and more at www.dell.com/energy.

It’s no secret that customers face energy-related challenges every day, and we’re taking practical steps to address them. For Dell, leading Climate Savers Computing Initiative is the latest effort in bringing our colleagues in the industry along to our way of thinking. This effort coincides with our work in The Green Grid, a consortium seeking to focus on improving the energy efficiency of the data center and business computing environments . See Rick’s earlier blog post for more on this topic.

Dell is committed to providing you products that will deliver the maximum performance you need for the minimum amount of power.
