Fostering Leadership: Insights from the Dell Technologies iLEAD Leadership Programme

A Journey of Self-Awareness

The iLEAD programme has reminded me of the journey I have travelled, the changing ecosystem of the regions I have lived and worked in, and the person I have become over the years. Acknowledging both my strengths and weaknesses is a crucial starting point in my ongoing quest for self-improvement and personal growth.

The first day was filled with introspection and self-discovery. As I sit down to reflect on my thoughts, emotions, and experiences, I am reminded of the importance of taking the time to understand myself deeply and practice self-awareness.

Additionally, I take pride in my strong adaptability to change and my ability to learn quickly. In today’s fast-paced world, the capacity to adapt and evolve is indispensable, and I am grateful for my innate ability to embrace change and thrive in dynamic environments.

Strategic Agility: Adapting Plans for Success

The second module was a dive into the realm of strategy and planning, the fundamental principles of “why, what, how”. These three elements form the cornerstone of effective decision-making, providing clarity, direction, and purpose to every endeavour. First, I had to understand that the heart of any strategic initiative lies the question of “why.” Understanding the purpose and vision behind a particular course of action is essential for aligning efforts, rallying stakeholders, and driving meaningful change. Grasping the “why” behind decisions is not only paramount to an organisation’s success, but also defines the long-term objectives and shapes the future look of the organisation.

Moreover, for people seeking to enhance their financial acumen and contribute to business decision-making, understanding the “what” involves familiarising yourself with relevant financial metrics, performance indicators, and strategic priorities. The content was entirely new to me and I had to do some proactive learning by seeking mentorship from seasoned professional colleagues.

Finally, the “how” is all about the execution and implementation of strategic plans. This phase requires careful coordination, resource allocation, and ongoing monitoring to ensure that objectives are achieved efficiently and effectively.

Leading with Purpose: Inspiring People to Greatness

As I reflect on my experiences in managing teams, I am struck by the profound lessons I have learned about delegation, diversity and inclusion, and team leadership. Each aspect plays a crucial role in fostering a collaborative and high-performing team environment, and I have come to appreciate their significance through firsthand experience.

In today’s diverse and interconnected world, embracing diversity and fostering inclusion is essential for the success of any team. Through my experiences, I’ve travelled across the EMEA region and learned the importance of not only acknowledging, but also celebrating the unique perspectives and backgrounds that each team member brings to the table. Keeping an open mind on matters of religion, race, and culture-sensitive issues has been paramount in creating a safe and inclusive space where everyone feels valued and respected.

Personally, allowing a sense of ownership of projects within the team has been transformative in driving engagement and commitment. By providing autonomy and support, I’ve witnessed how individuals flourish, taking initiative and demonstrating leadership in their respective roles.

Business Acumen Unleashed

The fourth module goes much deeper in explaining the business dynamics. I have come to realise the pivotal role that curiosity plays in unlocking insights, driving innovation, and fostering strategic decision-making. During this month, I have learned that I can identify root causes and implement sustainable solutions that mitigate risks and drive long-term success simply by:

      • Forging strategic partnerships and hearing diverse perspectives.
      • Leveraging data to quantify outcomes.
      • Adopting a curious mindset and exploring the interconnectedness of systems.
      • Connecting the dots to solve problems at the root

As I embark on this journey of discovery, I learned that it is critical to avoid “sharp elbows” and “putting oneself last” to establish a culture of collaboration, respect, and mutual support in the workplace.

Transformational Leadership: Inspiring Growth and Innovation

As I delved into the concept of transformational leadership, contemplating its essence through the framework of the finite vs. infinite game, our executive guest speaker reminded us of the importance of long-term objectives and the fundamental principle that “leadership is not about being in charge, but rather about taking care of those in charge.”

My notes also state that by articulating clear and compelling long-term objectives, I can empower individuals to connect their work to a larger purpose, fostering a sense of meaning and fulfilment in their roles.

In conclusion, the journey of transformational leadership is a continuous evolution, guided by the principles of the infinite game. By embracing long-term objectives, nurturing a culture of purpose and collaboration. A transformational leader should inspire positive change, drive sustainable growth, and leave a lasting impact on those he has the privilege to lead.

As I stand at the threshold of the next step in my journey, I am filled with a sense of anticipation and excitement for the adventures that lie ahead. Reflecting on the path I have travelled thus far, I realise that every module and experience has served as a valuable resource, equipping me with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the challenges and opportunities that await.

The iLEAD Leadership Programme has been an eye-opening journey of self-discovery and growth. Through six insightful modules, I’ve gained valuable insights and practical skills that have equipped me to become a more effective leader. From understanding the importance of self-awareness and embracing diversity to fostering a culture of curiosity and collaboration, each module has provided unique perspectives and tools for empowering tomorrow’s leaders. With the support of my mentor, I feel more confident and prepared to tackle the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in my leadership journey.
