Software Redefines Protection Storage

With businesses trying to transform faster than ever, the data protection landscape is evolving at light speed. Protection methods that worked yesterday might leave businesses vulnerable tomorrow. Staying ahead of the curve requires adaptability. For that reason, software has never had a bigger role in powering data protection and enabling your business transformation.

While purpose-built backup appliances (PBBA) have transformed backup for thousands, they have historically focused on traditional backup processes and workloads. However, EMC’s software-centric strategy goes beyond the bounds of traditional PBBA to protection storage, which delivers open, intelligent and cloud-ready data protection for the customers’ entire environment today and into the future.

To help accelerate this journey, EMC is announcing new protection storage software and hardware, including:

  • New Data Domain software (DD OS) that enables up to 16% faster performance across the Data Domain product line
  • A preview of a software-defined version of Data Domain, codenamed ‘Project Falcon’, that enables customers deploying a software-defined data center to easily spin up a pool of storage for protection
  • New EMC ProtectPoint software integration with Oracle, SAP and IBM DB2
  • Industry-first Data Lake Protection Solutions for Pivotal HD, Cloudera and HortonWorks
  • New Data Domain DD9500, the fastest and most scalable protection storage in the world

Data Domain Software

New Data Domain software (DD OS 5.6) super-charges performance across the ENTIRE Data Domain product line with up to 16% faster performance. In addition, Data Domain software enables an industry-first solution to protect Big Data on protection storage. This includes protecting the most common Hadoop and NoSQL deployment models: Pivotal HD, Cloudera and Hortonworks on Data Domain.

Project Falcon

Keep an eye on this bird, ‘Project Falcon’ will bring software-only protection storage, providing industry leading Data Domain software wherever customers need it. With Project Falcon, customers will get the ultimate in agility and efficiency – with systems up and running in minutes and flexible deployment models – including remote office, hybrid cloud and more.

EMC ProtectPoint

Building on this industry-first solution introduced last year, ProtectPoint provides the best of both worlds in data protection with direct backup from primary to protection storage. New additions to the ProtectPoint software offer direct integration with Oracle, SAP and IBM DB2. This will enable application owners and database administrators to backup directly from their own utilities, but remove the backup impact on their applications servers. By eliminating traditional backup applications, ProtectPoint offers cost effective data protection and up to 20x faster performance than traditional backup.

Data Domain DD9500

EMC introduces the Data Domain DD9500, the fastest and most scalable protection storage in the world, powered by DD OS 5.6. With throughput of up to 58.7 TB/hr, the DD9500 is 1.6x faster than its closest competitor. Industry-leading scale of up to 1.7 PB of usable capacity and the ability to protect up to 86.4 PB of logical capacity, makes the DD9500 4x more scalable than the closest competitor. Additionally, this high-end system supports up to 1080 concurrent backup and archive streams and the ability to consolidate up to 540 remote sites.
