Dell’s most powerful 15” and 17” Precision mobile workstations – redesigned to be thinner, lighter and Ready for VR – are now also available pre-loaded with Ubuntu Linux 16.04. This follows the initial announcement back in May, when the Dell Precision 3530 mobile workstation with Ubuntu Linux 16.04 became available.
When it comes to pure power, these machines are unmatched. Both feature 8th generation Intel® Core® and Xeon™ Processors with up to 6 cores as well as AMD Radeon™ Pro and NVIDIA® Quadro® professional graphics. And the 17” 7730 is the first Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning mobile workstation available.
“Of particular note is the increased core count and memory,” said Project Sputnik leader Barton George on his blog.“In fact, the maximum memory has doubled to 128GB which helps with cloud developer local workloads. In the case of the 7730, which is the perfect platform for AI developers, it supports up to 8TB of PCIe NVME storage, the most PCIe storage on the market today..”
Project Sputnik began back in 2012 when George came up with the idea to load our super sleek Dell XPS 13 with Ubuntu to give developers the essentials they want. Guided by input from the community the Sputnik team then tailored this system to specifically meet developers’ needs. From there forward it’s been the continued input and feedback from the developer community that has made Project Sputnik a long-term success.
“Canonical have been part of Dell’s Project Sputnik project since Day 1, and over five years later we are excited to see continuous innovation in open source computing solutions,” James Donner noted on their blog. “Canonical’s engineers have collaborated with the team at Dell to guarantee a first-class Ubuntu experience out of the box.”
Our complete Precision mobile workstation portfolio first became available globally with Linux pre-loaded in 2016. To get to the Ubuntu option, simply click on the “Customize & Buy” button on the system you wish to purchase, then click on “more” to see and select Ubuntu Linux in the operating system section.
These newest systems, which represent the fourth generation of the Precision developer editions, have also been Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7.5 certified.
“That being said, the AMD and NVIDIA drivers that come with 7.5 are inbox drivers,” said George. “We will be posting drivers for both graphics cards that will include professional features not included in the inbox drivers. Stay tuned.”
Stay tuned also for the developer edition of our thinnest, lightest and smallest 15″ mobile workstation – the Dell Precision 5530. But today, the uber-powerful 7530 and 7730 are now live on dell.com:
