Dell Announces New Features to the DR4000 Backup Appliance

Posted on behalf of Ray Balli, Storage Launch Manager, DR4000

With data volumes doubling every 18 months and businesses operating 24/7, IT departments are under intense pressure to ensure data availability and integrity while meeting capacity and backup window constraints. The Dell DR4000 deduplication and compression backup appliance can help overcome these challenges by reducing the amount of data that needs to be stored and replicated. By removing redundant data from the backup work stream, the DR4000 can drastically reduce the storage footprint, enable backup data to remain on disk and online longer, provide faster and more reliable restores, and reduce reliance on tape.

The DR4000 is a high-performance, disk-based backup and recovery appliance that is simple to deploy and manage, and offers unsurpassed total cost of ownership benefits. Features such as innovative firmware and an all-inclusive licensing model provide optimal functionality and help eliminate the hidden costs of future feature upgrades. The DR4000 has a simple installation process with intuitive remote setup and management capabilities, and is available in four logical capacity points—35TB, 70TB, 130TB or 270TB—ideal for small enterprise and remote office environments.

Three new features to the DR4000 have been added for additional performance, flexibility and ease of use.

1) Support for Symantec OpenStorage (OST), an API that enables third-party intelligent storage devices to tightly integrate with Symantec backup software applications. When a DR4000 is used with OST, the backup

application becomes aware of the properties and capabilities of the appliance, and can better control back up images. The DR4000 with DR Rapid Data Access can significantly increase performance and can now backup up to 5.38 terabytes of data per hour when using Symantec OST.

2) Many-to-one replication is introduced giving remote offices or locations a way to back up to a centralized location for disaster recovery.

3) Additional backup software certifications: In addition to CommVault and Symantec certification, the DR4000 now supports Networker, Veeam, and AppAssure 4.
