It seems that it is almost daily that we hear about massive data breaches and the risks for one have never been greater. Security is always top of mind for every CIO as they implement technologies into their environment and in the ever connected world we live in, it is imperative that we protect everything in our environment from the device to the cloud, but also still allow our people to be productive and innovative while they are safe. Here at Dell, we use many of our own Dell technologies that protect us in every part of the security challenge.
As I mentioned in my last blog, this new highly connected world allows our workforces to be extremely mobile, yet they always need access to the network no matter where they are so that they can be productive. Our workforce of over 100,000 employees can access our Dell Network from anywhere using our own Dell SonicWALL Aventail Secure Remote Access, or VPN. This VPN solution provides the flexibility for an employee to be productive from anywhere on their own schedule, while still keeping Dell’s network and data secure. The Dell IT and Security teams worked hand in hand with the Dell SonicWALL team to develop the VPN solution to meet our manageability and scalability needs as a very large enterprise. Since the implementation of the SonicWALL VPN, employee feedback has been extremely positive and calls to our help desk have reduced greatly because the product is so stable.
To further mitigate the security risk associated with such a large enterprise, we deployed Dell One Identity Manager (DOIM) to track the access privileges and permissions of our global workforce on the corporate network. DOIM not only can handle the size of our company, but is also a great solution to support our dynamic environment with both on premise and cloud-based solutions. We use DOIM for identity provisioning and are currently managing over 100,000 identities within Active Directory. The tool is extremely versatile and can be used for much more, including database account attestation.
We also encrypt all of our global corporate devices with Dell Data Protection | Encryption (DDP | E). Encrypting over 100,000 devices can be daunting and making sure they all remain encrypted through periodic updates is an even bigger challenge. DDP | E allows our engineers to create and enforce enterprise wide encryption policies using profile information from Active Directory to apply encryption parameters to specific types of workers. The tool also enables productivity with non-disruptive encryption and behind the scenes updates.
Of course, even with all of these safeguards, internet hackers will always try to find a way into your environment to steal data. Through Dell Secureworks Security Monitoring we are able to manage all of those threats and react to the credible potential attacks. Secureworks manages over 60B security events for Dell a month, and only escalates around 150 of those to our internal information security group to investigate further, which enables us to focus on the credible threats, keeping our data safe.
