A Leading Vendor: New Gartner Magic Quadrant Names EMC a Solid-State Array Leader

Gartner has placed EMC in the “Leaders” quadrant of its inaugural Magic Quadrant for Solid-State Arrays report with the highest execution. We believe XtremIO arrays and VNX-F technology rocketed EMC into this spot after less than a year on the market, with huge demand for XtremIO and VNX-F technology seeing great uptake with enterprise customer deployments worldwide.

But sales aren’t enough to land a product in the Leaders quadrant. According to Gartner, Vendors must also have the market share, credibility, and marketing and sales capabilities needed to drive the acceptance of new technologies. This is where EMC’s unique blend of innovation and market leadership helps us excel.

The XtremIO array is the only scale-out array in the Leaders quadrant. We believe that engineering a scale-out storage array is far more complex than making a dual-controller array, and EMC has done this incredibly well with the XtremIO array. We believe EMC has the gamut of customer needs covered by offering scale-up and scale-out solutions to enable the agile data center.

Though EMC wasn’t first to market with an all-flash array, we were the first to market with a true 2nd generation scale-out all-flash array and we pioneered the hybrid flash market. And now we are leading in all-flash.

EMC also wasn’t late to market with a “me too” product—with the XtremIO array, we were first to market with a new architecture and a better way of doing things. Our customers can see the differentiation today, and they understand that both our scale-out in-memory metadata architecture and our deep integration across the EMC Federation products are unique–and these will take us places that other vendors won’t be able to reach.

And herein lies the magic of XtremIO: we redefined what a storage array should be, beginning with a clean sheet of paper. From the very beginning, the XtremIO array was a much more ambitious project than simply building another flash array; it was a way to improve and simplify the way applications like databases and business apps are deployed and consolidated and managed through storage innovation. Early XtremIO customers quickly realized that the XtremIO array delivers benefits far beyond performance, offering rich data services and unique integration with best-of-breed EMC and VMware solutions like ViPR and RecoverPoint. This enables mixed workload consolidations and complete database ecosystems across production, analytics and testing and development. We believe these capabilities have been the catalyst for rapid success in the market, and our placement in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant.

EMC also understands that “one size fits all” is an obsolete approach and therefore provides the right tool for the job. VNX-F technology rounds out EMC’s All Flash portfolio as a cost-effective alternative for applications that either do not benefit from data reduction or rely on the application layer for those data services. Customers across the world are deploying VNX-F technology to accelerate online transactions, search and capture business intelligence data quicker, and run virtual SQL and Oracle faster. And EMC is not stopping there. Watch this space for exciting updates to VNX-F technology in the very near future.

In short, while the EMC portfolio is formidable today, the best in flash is yet to come.

This “Leader” designation from Gartner comes on the heels of a monster second quarter, when XtremIO surpassed a $300 million annualized demand run rate[1] during only the second full quarter of product availability, establishing the XtremIO array as the  leader in the all-flash array market on sales alone. New customer wins, including new-to-EMC accounts, repeat XtremIO customers, customers purchasing our larger 20 terabyte X-Bricks, customers who have purchased more than $1 million of XtremIO arrays and customers using XtremIO arrays for workload consolidation and new use cases bolstered EMC’s all-flash market leadership.
