Are You on Solid Ground?
According to a recent survey by Vanson Bourne to over 3300 IT decision makers globally, 87% of businesses are behind the curve for data protection maturity and 71% of businesses are not fully confident of restoring their data and applications. Collectively, these enterprises are losing $1.7 trillion through data loss and unplanned downtime. The more data protection vendors they throw at their problems, the more data loss they experienced and the cost of downtime exploded to 5X the level of using just one vendor. Sounds like the ground is swampy to me.
Businesses need a new and less complex approach to data protection – one that leverages a continuum of solutions for availability, replication, backup and recovery, archiving and is designed to deliver specific RTO and RPO service levels across consumption models, e.g., virtual and hybrid cloud. EMC has the solution, delivering data protection as a service across the complete Data Protection Continuum. So, no matter where your data lives or what happens, you are protected.
Automating Delivery of Data Protection Services
What if you could automate the delivery of storage with the right data protection services based on the criticality of the production applications and visualize and report on data protection SLAs? Would you now be more confident that you are on solid ground when recovering your systems/data/apps? This is possible when adding EMC ViPR Controller and ViPR SRM to your data protection strategy.
ViPR Controller is storage automation software that discovers, abstracts, pools, and provisions primary and protection storage, simplifying the configuration and management of data protection services such as continuous availability, remote replication, snapshots, and archiving to eliminate data loss and disruptions.
ViPR SRM is storage resource management software that enables IT to visualize storage relationships, analyze configurations and capacity growth, troubleshoot performance and latency issues, and monitor compliance of replication policies for active-active environments and remote DR sites.
ViPR Controller Ecosystem and Data Domain System Integrations
In this first of a 3-part blog series, let’s take a look at the ViPR Controller ecosystem and architecture and how Data Domain systems integrate.
The ViPR Controller recognizes all physical arrays including VMAX and VNX block storage, Isilon and VNX file storage, VPLEX, third-party or commodity storage and in this most recent release, Data Domain has been added for protection storage. ViPR Controller delivers this storage to users and tenants via a service catalog so, application owners and developers are able to easily select the class of storage they need. Storage services are well-defined and meet the service levels required by applications and users—all while removing error-prone and time-intensive manual processes. Provisioning tasks that typically take days to complete are now done instantly.
Data Domain systems have been integrated with ViPR Controller enabling provisioning of protection storage. So, ViPR Controller customers can now gain the benefits of industry-leading protection storage including high-speed, variable-length deduplication, network efficient replication, and the ultimate defense against data integrity issues through the Data Domain Data Invulnerability Architecture. ViPR Controller discovers the Data Domain system and automates the complex provisioning processes so, admins can let ViPR Controller automatically find and match Data Domain protection storage pools to be added to their protection service offering. Other tasks such as assigning Data Domain storage to a host, whether it is a CIFS share or NFS export, are automated as well. With ViPR Controller’s service catalog and Data Domain systems, protection storage can now be virtualized and dynamically allocated to tenants for data protection based on their business needs and the admin can provide on-demand data protection as a service.
