Looking back on Gartner Security& Risk Management Summit in National Harbor, MD, one must be impressed with filling three and half days of high quality information with the intent to help enterprise IT professionals develop and validate security and risk management strategies.
It is going to be virtually impossible for an attendee not to have found something relevant during this past week which will help them better secure their environment.
I found the analysts to be friendly, inviting, and truly interested in their topics. Each session clearly stated the issues to be discussed, provided details to help better understand them, and recommendations to consider when reviewing possible solutions. Topics included an enterprise perspective for BYOD, mobile security, application, network and endpoint security, security monitoring and reporting, and so much more. They even had three days where all the analysts were available to reserve one-on-ones for those eligible. This was extremely valuable for attendees to talk with the Gartner specialists and receive guidance and direction on achieving specific security objectives.
Gartner had a nice balance of addressing today’s nagging problems while also increasing visibility of expected security issues to come.
Of course, the World Cup had a major presence this week. The camaraderie among the attendees helped create a more bonding and experience. People high-fiving each other and cheering on the national soccer team, even when they were total strangers. Attendees were more open to discuss their security situation, status in addressing issues, and exchange thoughts of what to consider. It seems to me, putting people in a common patriotic mood, and it’s amazing to see total strangers open up and share information.
Attending the sessions and taking to attendees, there is no question that helping enterprises implement their BYOD objectives by maximizing the use of personal devices in a secure manner is the key to success. Making it simple, intuitive, seamless and secure is required.
After spending three days at the conference and focusing my attention on mobile security, enterprise mobility management, I am convinced that Dell is moving in the right direction. Dell’s Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) solution that incorporates container and secure endpoint technologies, along with the new Dell Secure Mobile Access solution, provides an ideal alternative to existing products for securing and managing the use of personal owned devices to access the company resources.
The Gartner Security & Risk Management Summit was ideal for interacting with industry specialists as well as getting insight into enterprise IT security issues. I know I will be able to use this information to be more effective in my role. And at the end of the day, isn’t being able to better influence security needs, what it is all about!?
