Boot from USB device on Inspiron 5520
Hey guys,
I got a new Inspiron 15R 5520. The problem is I can't boot the laptop from a USB stick like I did on N5040(My 2 years old laptop), and there is no option to do this. First, I hit 'F2' to enter the BIOS setup page, there are only 3 options under the boot device: Hard Drive, CD/DVD, Network. I restart the computer and hit 'F12' to select boot device, still no USB.
Does Dell freeze the function to boot from USB device? Is there any solution? Thanks in advance.

Hi SimonJia,
This system is designed in such a way that it does not have an option to boot from USB.
Please reply for any further questions.

Thank you Vikram,
It was confirmed by a dell technician that the boot from USB option only appears when a bootable USB device is plugged in.

This is what I did:
F12 > Change boot mode setting > Legacy Boot Mode, Secure Boot Off > Yes > F12
And the I could choose to boot from USB

I used to boot from external USB hard disk but it is huge(1000 GB) and it has lots of preinstalled application (WD model my passport) and its also bootable and has recovery software preinstalled. I think thats the reason it appears in Bios as an option to boot from USB

sorry, but how does the hardware detects that a usb stick is bootable?
a specific file?
a flag on the "disc partition"? (sorry if it isn't the right term...)

er.. in fact, I worked my problem out.
but I do have an other question:
how can I add my usb disk's bootable partition to the list of UFEI boot list?
