Bird Chirping Sound

Occationally, my laptop produces a bird chirping sound that goes like chirp, chirp-chirp and chirp-chirp-chirp. Everything seems OK, no software or hardware failure but just wondering why the sound comes. Is it a new wifi detected or something. Any ideas friends.

The only two things that have moving parts are the hard drive and the fan (assuming there's no CD/DVD in the drive).  One of these is likely responsible.

Hello ejn63,

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't think it has to do with the HD or fan. The sound actually comes from the speakers, just like a wav or mp3 file playing. Did a search to locate all wav file and mp3, but non of them are bird sounds. Thanks anyway, but will really appreciate it if someone points out what the sounds is meant for?

Hi JSPBro,

This is a common issue, when you have a program installed associated with it. Most common is a program called Weather Bug Application, try disabling it in the startup, click start, run, type msconfig, click on startup tab on top, and uncheck Weather bug, click apply and restart your computer.

Thank you

Royan

I'm having this same bird song or bird chirp coming from my Dell laptop.  I currently have windows 7 64 bit installed.  I cannot find anything called weather bug in my msconfig startup.

It only does it on occasion, and I cannot figure out the pattern. It can go for a week or 2 without chirping.  This morning, it did it 3 times in 1.5 hours.  Its driving me NUTS!

Its definitely a .wav file or similar.  Its definitely NOT a failing hard drive.  I know the difference.

hello scarab2000,

I had the similar problem and this is what i did. You can try this but i don't guarantee anything.

1. Check your broadband connection, I'm in Malaysia and use Celcom (a local ISP) and every time a SMS comes, it starts chirping :emotion-39:. Disabled the SMS notification and the problem went away :emotion-1:.

2. Then it came again, my notebook restarts itself, and my hard drive failed after sometime :emotion-9:, so I'm not sure exactly if the chirping was due to the SMS notification or a eminent hardware failure :emotion-42:. What you can do is that, dell has a hardware diagnostic tool (mine was called ePSA) which can be executed either within windows itself or by hitting F8 during boot-up and selecting ePSA. Try that just to make sure your hardware is OK.

Anyway I reported online to dell and they replaced my hard drive within 2 days onsite-in my house (I must say that dell's after sales service is really good :emotion-5:), but I got a raw hard drive and the factory fitted one has the installation OS inside. Had to take it to a shop to have the OS reinstalled. So please use "dell backup" software to backup the OS and driver before you do anything.

Just as a precaution, right-click on the taskbar, choose 'start taskbar', select 'processes' tab, and check to see is the weather app from dell is running in the background, if so select the weather app and click 'end process'.   Run your system for sometime to see if the bird is trying to talk to you - :emotion-2:.

For your info, my system is Windows7 - 64 bit, running on Dell Inspiron N5110 i7 processor. I am also not a dell staff, just a satisfied customer of dell.

What is the SMS notification software called, and where would I find it if it were running (processes, MSConfig) ?

I don't see anything called "weather app" in Tast Manager --> Processes.

My particular Dell laptop originally shipped with Windows Vista.  I installed a new hard drive, and installed Win 7 64 bit Pro when it came out in 2009. There isn't much Dell bloatware on this laptop, though I did install some for drivers and diagnostics some time ago (for an unrelated issue).

I will try the ePSA hardware check and post back here with the results.

The only test I saw was for memory.  No problems found.

It definitely sounds like one of your installed programs (or even Windows itself) has an assigned sound for a particular action. Can easily be checked. Control Panel>Sound>Sounds...check the list of Program Events and see if anything in there is making this noise. Alternatively turn all sounds OFF for a time and see if the sound reoccurs.

"checked. Control Panel>Sound>Sounds...check the list of Program Events and see if anything in there is making this noise"

Yesturday I tried that.  I played each and every sound listed.  None of them are this bird tweeting sound (which is a recording)

Do you have any active desktop gadgets?

As per a suggestion I received elsewhere, I changed the mixer settings.

I had "Device: speakers" set to max volume

Applications: System Sounds set to about 25%

Mozilla Firefox (my default browser) set to 25%

My computer just played the birdsong sound again just 3 min ago. It was at max volume.

Nope.  I just checked, and I had no active gadgets

I just woke my computer (it was asleep for a few hours as I left for a while, and I always put it to sleep), and it tweeted again at max volume.

Its definitely an application causing the tweeting sound.  Another application just came up and gave me a warning about something.  It also makes a sound, and that was at max volume.
