Vista will only boot with SATA Operation set to "ATA" and Flash Cache Module disabled.
Vista was not installing properly on my sister's Laptop so i found instructions in this post advising a way of installing Vista by temporarily setting the Sata Operation to ATA from AHCI. However, to do this the system required I also disable the Flash cache module. I installed Vista, which booted fine. However, when I went back into F2 startup menu and changed back to the original settings Vista would not boot. I tried everything, but it is only when I go back to ATA and disabled Flash Cache Module that it boots.
In the post I link to above "Dell Jesse-L" states that you can also install the "Intel Matrix Storage driver" by finding an install driver option on one of the F2 setup screens. However, I cannot see this option to install drivers anywhere in setup. My sister's laptop is a Dell Insprion PP22X.
Are the original settings (SATA set to AHCI, and Flash cache module enabled) even necessary? Doesn't their usefulness depend on the type of hardware you have? I know my sister used to regularly get the blue screen of death even when Vista was running. This is when these settings were in their original state.
Can anyone tell me if this is a reliable way to give the laptop back to my sister or will there be too many complications. If someone can advise me on how to install drivers from the startup menu then I will try this, but will I have to reinstall Vista to do this??

"Are the original settings (SATA set to AHCI, and Flash cache module enabled) even necessary?"
Not really, many people run them like yours is currently configured without issues.
You would need to reinstall Vista with flash cache and AHCI enabled in the bios prior to installing Vista, during setup you will be given a chance to load drivers, this is where you need to load the Sata driver for your model. Once Vista is installed you cannot change the AHCI setting in the bios, this is normal.
There may be a way to add the driver afterwards and change the setting in the bios, but I don't know how to do this for Vista.
Inspiron ? PP22X does not tell me anything.
If you want to reinstall, I can point you to the Sata driver if I have the model number.

I agree with mombodog as I went through this headache for days after first reinstalling Vista a year or so ago and found that I had to download the drivers ahead of time so they could be integrated as part of the Vista installation for the AHCI mode to work correctly.

Thanks guys. For now I have just installed using the ATA and flash cache module disabled. I noticed at time that a lot of CPU was being used even when I closed all applications. I guess this could be down to Vista downloading updates? I suppose I will have to get feedback from my sister on how fast the laptop performs.
