XPS 9320 - display goes black when screen is moved to 90 degree angle

I can view my desktop if I log into the Dell XPS 13 Plus laptop with my screen at a 45 degree angle. If I lift the screen so that it is almost at a 90 degree angle with respect to the keyboard, the display goes black.

The only way I can get the screen to turn back on (and show the login screen) is to press the power button, tilt the screen back down to a 45 degree angle, and press the mouse keypad. If I do not login, after a couple of minutes, there are two red leds on top of the screen which keep on flashing continuously for a couple of minutes (note: the laptop is connected to the charger right now). I know that there is no battery problem because when I booted up in BIOS, I saw that the battery health was good and the battery was at 90%.

If the screen is at 90 degrees or greater, the screen is black no matter what I do.

Hopefully the system is under warranty  -- if it is, call Dell to set up a repair.  If it is out of warranty, you'll want to;

Unplug the system.

Remove the base cover and disconnect the battery from the mainboard.  Hold the power button for 30 sec.

Disconnect the display cable from the mainboard and check both it and the mainboard and cable connector for damage or bent pins.

If the the cable is damaged, the display assembly will need to be replaced.  If the mainboard connector is damaged, the mainboard will need to be replaced.

If there's no evident damage, reconnect the cable, reassemble the system and check again.

Service manual is here:

The laptop is out of warranty. It sounds like I need to get the laptop repaired. I spent two hours with this laptop. It looks like a hardware problem.

I ended up taking it to a Dell-certified repair center. The technician thought that there might be a problem with the cable (only based on observing me demonstrating the problem).

My 9320 has the same issue.  It's just over a year old.  The screen goes black if opened slightly past 90 degrees.  It also goes black while using and I can restore it by passing one of my ear buds over the comma key.  (Ear buds have a magnet to hold them in the charging case).  This simulates a lid close and the screen returns.  I discovered this hack when I noticed the laptop has a strong magnet on the lid above the comma key.  It easily captures and holds the USB-C to USB-A adapter included with the laptop.

I have the OLED touch panel.  It's otherwise beautiful, bright, vivid colors and no apparent dead pixels.

So is it the main board or display panel?

My system is under a service plan so what's the best way to get it fixed?

That is great that your Dell is still under warranty. You should contact Dell and see how you should handle the repair (so that it gets reimbursed). I don't know if they will ask you to ship it back to them (with some prepaid shipping box). I took my laptop to a Dell-certified repair center. The technician said that he would see if the problem was due to a loose cable. He connected the laptop to an external monitor and saw that the screen content was being displayed to the external monitor even when the laptop screen went back. He said that was a good sign that the problem of the screen going black was not due to a problem in the motherboard. My problem had to be repaired by replacing the screen/display. Maybe you can do this experiment of connecting your laptop to an external monitor to see if the screen is still displayed to the external monitor when your laptop display goes black. Actually, if your laptop is still under warranty, you don't need to troubleshoot it. Just get Dell to fix it.

@Shorty135 How did you go about getting the screen replaced? My machine is 1.5 yrs old and out of warranty, but I'm having the same problems as described by you above. Our local certified tech team took a look and thinks the display needs to be replaced and is suggesting I find one on a resale website. I'd prefer to get a certified part if possible.

@rradina036fdc

I am having the same issue and your trick with the magnet works regadless of the position of the screen. Did you even figure out what was the issue?

@ckstout, since my laptop was out of warranty, I had to pay the repair center to install a new screen (parts and labor = $388.85). On top of that, I had to pay a fee for diagnosing the problem. I asked the technician what can cause this kind of problem in the display --he said possibly lifting a laptop up by the display/screen. This laptop was being used for college. I was asking myself if I should fix it or buy a new laptop. Given the age of the laptop (2 years), I decided to fix it. What did you end up doing? Now I have a new problem where my integrated webcam is not working. I see that some people have to replace the screen to fix that problem. If you replace your screen, test out your integrated webcam.

Mine is just out of warrantee and technician says it will cost £400 to fix. Seeing how common this problem is, I guess this machine requires a running budget of £400 per annum! Very disappointing. My last Dell (inspiron) also failed at the screen hinge (in that case after 4 years) looks like they don't care. That's the last DELL I'll be buying. No reward for brand loyalty.
