XPS 17 9700 Screen freezing and artifacts followed by flickering

Hi,

I recently purchased a Dell XPS 17 with SHP14D7 Display (full specs below). This is the standard non-touch, non-4k display.

I have an issue where the screen will occasionally completely freeze. While it is frozen it appears there is a stipple pattern where a subset of the pixels appear to be turrned off. If I am watching a video, pressing the space bar causes the sound to continue to play, so it doesn't seem that the OS itself is frozen, rather just the display. The only way i have found to unfreeze the screen is through a hard restart by holding down the power button or closing the laptop lid and reopening it. If I close the lid and reopen, the screen is no longer frozen but now flickers and that flickering does not stop until I restart the computer. I've mostly been using the laptop plugged in to a dock with monitors, and i have never seen the issue when it i plugged in.

Dell customer support (through two remote desktop sessions) has ensured that I have all the correct and up-to-date drivers, which they told me would resolve the problem. Both times it did not.

They now want me to reinstall the OS before doing hardware repairs. Has anyone else had this issue? if so, how did you end up getting it fixed? I am wary of being dragged through yet more time-consuming software steps only to have to return the laptop for repairs...

I use this laptop for work and have a lot of data on it and software installed, so doing a complete OS reinstallation is a huge pain. I've used the computer for less than a month and in addition to this issue already had to have the keyboard and mouse deck replaced due to a really wobbly trackpad.

I've attached a photo of the weird stipple pattern that happens when the screen freezes.

Any advice much appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi! I have the exact same problem. Has anyone found a solution yet? I bought this laptop so I could be more productive. Now I'm wondering whether that was worth it.

Maybe this? I have the same model and have been experiencing this issue. Did a clean Windows 11 installation and a hard reset, and it’s okay now. Although I occasionally experience this also, it’s pretty brief, like 1-2 seconds, only. Just saw this post, I’ll try configuring it later.
