XPS 15 9510, Intel UHD causing lag

I have been browsing around these Dell forums and it appears this is a common problem amongst a lot of the Dell XPS laptops. I have a Dell XPS 15 9510 model purchased at the start of this year and the Intel onboard UHD GPU is causing the PC to lag to the point where it's unusable.

Dell have already performed all possible troubleshooting, they even replaced the motherboard which I believe the onboard Intel graphics card is and still the same problem.

I have tried all sorts of drivers, Windows 10, Windows 11 and nothing makes any difference. The only solution for me was to disable the Intel graphics card in device manager and let the Nvidia take over. Even then it still doesn't function like the laptop should.

When the computer starts it's fast for about 1 minute or so. As soon as I even start performing basic tasks like opening multiple MS word documents, the Intel GPU goes to almost 100% usage in Task manager and the laptop starts lagging again.

I leave it alone for a few minutes and Intel GPU goes back down to 1%. I start opening up a few files and once again Intel GPU shoots up to almost 100% usage and again it's unusable due to the lag.

There is nothing wrong with any of the components as they all tested fine in the BIOS self test.

Is there a solution to this? Going over all these forums people have found all sorts of workarounds but none work for me.

So currently are you using only the nvidia GPU or is the Intel GPU still enabled? If the Intel GPU was disabled there should not be mention of it in task manager.

That’s correct Intel GPU is disabled. Anytime I enable it it’s at 100% usage within about 2 minutes of just browsing basic websites and system just freezes and lags. If I don’t do anything for a few minutes but observe it in task manager under performance it tends to go down pretty quickly to 1% usage. As soon as you start moving the mouse around, open a few folders 100% GPU usage again within the space in 1-2 minutes. Dell technicians have no idea anymore and the motherboard on the laptop was already replaced.

yes you are also correct, once I disable in device manager it does not obviously show anything in task manager.

this was a very expensive laptop, I would expect much more than this out of it.

it cannot be a faulty graphics card as it was all replaced but I have no idea why the GPU usage shoots up sooo high with such basic tasks within a minute.

I don’t know that there is a way of throttling the performance/usage of the Intel GPU in windows.

has anybody else had this issue? Are there any solutions to this at all?

So, a couple of things here.

First, I've found you should never disable the on-board Intel GPU (IGP) as that causes problems. I suggest you use these settings:

Windows-11 Game-Mode is On (Enabled).
- Windows Security/ Device Security/ Core Isolation/ Memory Integrity = OFF
- Control Panel/ Programs And Features/ Turn Windows Features On-Off/ Virtual Machine Platform = OFF
Windows-11 in Settings/Display/Graphics
- Set these to High Performance (ie. use the dedicated Nvidia Graphics card)
- - for Steam, Origin, Epic, XBox App, or any other DRM and/or game Launchers
- - Fallout-76, World or Warcraft, or any Direct-X game.
- - Also any programs and Apps that are graphically demanding.
Windows-11 in Settings/Display/Graphics/Change Default Graphics Settings
- Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS) is DISABLED

The Intel-IGP should quietly "step aside" and let the Nvidia GPU mostly run. They also run in parallel or along-side each other.

The other troubling thing about your post is ... even if the Intel-IGP was handling all tasks ... it should easily be able to handle the Edge-Browser, Google-Chrome, Microsoft Word, actually any Microsoft Office 2021/365 program, etc.

Finally, the XPS-15 (9510) should have come with Windows-10, but should be able to run Windows-11. Pick one and clean-install it (no migrations or in-place upgrades).

What BIOS version is installed and Nvidia driver are you running?

Tesla thank you for the reply mate, unfortunately the changes above have made no difference whatsoever. I agree with you from what i've been reading I noticed that disabling the Onboard Intel GPU is not ideal but it's the only thing that seems to somewhat work for me.

It's just that no matter what, the Intel GPU shoots up to 100% usage within about a minute and it's virtually unusable.

So no real solution to this at all from Dell? Thousands of dollars down the drain on this lemon?

It appears this is a common problem amongst quite a few Dell XPS models, not just the 9510.

What BIOS revision are you on? Have you used Dell Update and/or SupportAssist and/or Windows update? You said that Dell has already replaced the motherboard once, if this is the case try to see if Dell will take back the laptop since somehow the issue has persisted.

Did you somehow fix it? I have exactly the same problem. I bought this laptop for ~3500$ and it's completely unusable now!

I've just downloaded the latest Windows Update - KB5022303 (OS Build 22621.1105) and it solved this issue for me.

yes exactly the same problem.  I have a 7 year old asus with a 7th gen i5 that performs better.

Super frustrating, seems to have come about recently and now causing a 3k machine to behave like 5 year old chromebook.

For those of you who still haven’t found the answer, click on task manager and have a look at the CPU performance.

Apparently a lot of these INTEL GPU issues actually don’t come from a fault Intel GPU.

it’s rather the cpu cores that have physically burned out on the motherboard.

my PC for instance was running at only 800mhz. After Dell replaced the board/CPU the problem went away.

CPU performance is fine so far as I can tell. The problem comes and goes, last time I reinstalled Windows and it was okay for a month. This all seemed to start from a windows update beginning of this year - was fine before. But this is a joke. 2 months outside of warranty Now useless $3000 door stop. dwm.exe running at 100% every time I so much as move a window. I've disabled my NVidia graphics cards, uninstalled all drivers, reinstalled just UHD and still the same. Tried just about everything. What can I do?

Good day to all. I sincerely hope a MSN Tech reads this and verifies this information. If they do their homework, they will help us poor people with it. It's a bug. It mimics the name in order to hide and does some good acrobatics to stay off the antivirus radar. Go to google and look for Process Explorer and download it. Open it and look for the dwm.exe program, it will be near the bottom. It also has no description or company name on it. There's your problem. Right click on it and click suspend, and watch as your processor speed drop to it's normally low levels. You can go to YouTube and search for this video =

@Guyver Bro I have the same problem like yours  on my xps 9700 for more than a year right now. Dell did everything they can, we changed the MB, the ssd, memories but the problem still persists. Personally I tried to go back to windows 10 to wipe everything from the hard drive but I still have the same problem. Did find a solution for that or not?
Please answer if yes. Thanks in advance.
