Mysterious LCD problem on XPS 15 9550

Hi guys,

I bought a xps 15 9550 in Vietnam. It was tested and is covered by 12 month warranty.

3 days after buying it, some weird lines started appearing on the screen. Depending what image is displayed they look a bit different. It is clearly not a driver issue as it happens in BIOS as well.

I returned the laptop but the company i bought it from is claiming It was a user damage and cannot be covered by warranty.

I know for a fact it happened randomly when I was just watching a Youtube video. Does anyone had the same problem and knows what it is? Could I have done it?

Please advise.

If all you see is a red screen (no cycling), replace the LCD assembly - it is bad.

Your images don't show here, but one diagnostic tool is the Dell built-in screen test - hold D through powerup.  This will initiate a set of test screens.

If the fault shows there, the screen needs to be replaced.

If it doesn't, it's more likely a cable or mainboard fault.

Since this system is several years old, it could be anything - but the warranty is between you and the seller, so you'll have to discuss that issue with them.

I am also having this issue but with horizontal lines. This is happening randomly and it is becoming too annoying. Unfortunately the issue started on month 14 or 15 after purchase, while the guarantee is 12 months.

I tried connecting the computer to an external monitor and the screen was displayed OK in this case. I also tried to update drivers.

I am assuming this is a screen part problem.

Run a screen diagnostic -hold D through powerup.  If you see the same fault there, the screen is bad and will need replacement. If not, the likelihood is the cable is bad (which still means a screen replacement) or the GPU is bad (meaning a mainboard replacement is needed).

Hi,

Same issue on my Dell xps 15 computer after nearly 2 years of purchase.

Any news from the topic starter?

Thanks for the reply!  I tried F12 to run diagnostic menu, its impossible to see the progress because of the screen freezes or color bars dont disappear :( At the normal Windows start, its ok for 1 minute but after a short time the screen and the Keyboard dont respond. I try teamviewer  as soon as starting windows,  I can control remotely :)  Any idea?

Hold the D key through powerup, which will initiate an independent screen self-test.

Hi!

I hold D and started the computer but it turns red screen can't see the progress. Keyboard or mouse doesn't respond.

I tried f12, cannot go to diagnostics menu because the arrow keys don't respond.

Thanks for advance.

Hi enj63,

Thanks for the reply. Since the warranty for parts is expired I have to pay for the lcd replacement. Its apparently that the Dell 15 xps 9550 computers have a common problem with the lcd screen...  Btw I attached the pictures for other users to see. 20181001_144121_Burst01.jpgdiagnostics.jpegWhatsApp Image 2018-10-02 at 13.22.12 (1).jpeg
