Dell XPS 13 7390 - Charging via USB-C

XPS 13 7390

XPS 13 7390

Hello, wondering if anyone can help me.

I recently got a second hand XPS 7390 (non 2-in-1) from my brother-in-law's office clearance, but it came with a WD19 dock instead of a charger.

I bought the following charger and a cable from Amazon:

When I plug it into the laptop it says "USB device not recognized", but the laptop is happily charging. In Device Manager it says "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)."

I've installed and reinstalled all the USB drivers to no avail. Is this simply because the power adapter is not officially USB-PD?  As I said, it still charges the laptop so I am a little confused as to whether it's safe and/or working.

Thanks for your time!

This system fully supports charging from USB-C/thunderbolt.

If you have another charger (such as for a cell phone) -- is that recognized? Or does it too show unknown?

Hi, thank you for your reply.

I have a 20W phone charger that displays the following when plugged in:

Like the other charger, this also charges the laptop when it is off.

In case anyone else reads this thread and has issues, Anker themselves replied:

"I have forwarded your cast to our engineering team. They purchased a new laptop and made a test today and found the same issue. The charger can work with other laptops in our laboratory but when charging the Dell 13" XPS 7390,it will say "USB device not recognized"

According to our engineer, charging the device with the wall charger is a process of protocol communication between the two items like "shake hands". Protocol communication is a very complicated situation. In this case, there may be some incompatibility issue when charging.

In this case, it seems that there is an incompatibility issue between your laptop and our Anker Nano II 65W charger. I am afraid that a replacement will not fix this issue."

I have since purchased this UGREEN 65W USB C Charger Plug 2-Port GaN Type C Fast Wall Power Adapter which works perfectly.
