Best Battery settings and behaviours to adopt to maximize battery longevity

Hi everyone!

What are the best BIOS and Windows settings, along with user habits, to ensure long-lasting battery life?

When setting up my new laptop, I asked the technician about the swollen touchpad on my previous XPS. He explained that the battery had swollen to the point of almost exploding, likely due to keeping it constantly plugged into AC power.

I was really scared and didn’t expect this to happen, especially since another technician had told me that these types of laptops were designed to be always connected to AC power.

Thank you!

If you usually run on AC adapter, set the battery to charge no more than 80% and then cut off.  Periodically you should run the system on AC and recharge normally.  Never let the battery drain until the system cuts off.

There's not much else you can do, though it's probably a good idea to replace the battery after three years regardless of whether it's swollen or not -- if you plan to keep the system longer than that.

I will put it in a different way.  There is no best option in BIOS settings to provide long lasting battery life.  When not sure, users can select adaptive option if available and let the system manage the battery life.

Each laptop can be used in different environments.  From gaming, heavy workload to lugging around school, work with light usages.  Each options should accommodate the prefer usage of users as intended but the less of charging cycles can give users more years of battery life.

To prolong battery life, you want to avoid fast and frequent of charge/discharge as it causes heat and heat will cause the battery to swell.  Although Dell has designed soft packed on some batteries to allow the expansion and it may still damage the system in a different way but it won't explode as from a hard cased battery.
