XPS One 2720, mSATA upgrade

Upgrade mSATA 32gb with another mSATA of 250gb. Good morning, I have an dell xps one 2720

I'm trying to replace the current mSATA 32gb (original) with another mSATA of 250gb (samsung 860 EVO).

I exchanged the two components and I restarted the PC but it gives me the message "no boot device", press f1 to try again or f2 for settings.

I reinserted the original mSATA and the pc starts correctly. What's wrong? Is there any setting to be done before replacing the mSATA or setting up a new disk before installing it?

thank you

Luigi

I assume that your OS is installed on the 32 GB mSATA drive. If you replace it with another drive then you have to install Windows (assuming your OS is Windows) on the new drive or you will see the no boot device error.

Unfortunately not. Windows is installed on the 2TB HD and the mSATA works as an Intel RST-controlled cash unit. In fact in the Bios the first unit that is activated as boot is the internal hd I want to replace the mSATA to increase the capacity and also because the current one starts to present problems.

The first thing you need to do is to disable caching of the 2 TB HDD before you remove the 32 GB mSATA. I think that is done in the Intel RST application. After that is done you should reboot to see if if you still can boot up. If that works then you can remove the 32 GB mSATA.

This is the part I am not completely sure about. The specifications say "one mSATA SSD" supported but it also states "one SSD with Intel Smart Cache support", so I don't know if the mSATA can be used as a boot device. So next I would change the SATA mode in the BIOS from RAID to AHCI and install the 250 GB mSATA and see if you can use it as just a storage device. After you install the 250 GB mSATA you will probably need to partition it and format it in Disk Management in order to use it.

If you can use the 250GB as normal storage you can try installing Windows on it. I would disconnect the HDD if you do this just to protect the HDD and also because you do not want to have two Windows boot devices to contend with.

Thanks a lot. I deactivated the acceleration and replaced the mSata disk without any problem.

The maximum assignable to the cache is 64gb so all the surplus (about 190gb) can be reused as a quick data disk.

Soon after, I reactivated the cache acceleration on the HD Sata.

All right. Thanks again
