XPS 8960, change power supply?

XPS 8960

XPS 8960

Good afternoon,

I took delivery of my XPS 8960 a few months ago. Ever since I've been chasing down noises, replacing fans (and having the AIO replaced). However, we are now onto the most recent issue which is the PSU, the fans are not only loud but create a knocking noise every so often. Dell has replaced this twice with louder units (which the representative who completes the work admits is too loud and has re booked appointments), its a real frustration and I'm hoping that there is a solution (as there is for previous generations) however this is beyond my technological ability. Really quite frustrating for a close to four thousand pound machine.

do you have the 1000w or 750w psu?  I would ask Dell to replace it with a psu made by a different psu manufacturer. they share psu with 8950.  although 8960 mobo has 12 pin socket, only the 1350w psu actually has all 12 pin connector while the 1000/750 have 10 pin connector c/w 12 pin socket.

Thank you for the quick response.

I have the 750W PSU, whilst I like Dell Premium support (they've been pretty decent about replacing these bits so far and reasonably quick in doing so) I do feel that asking for that would be slightly beyond them!

I was really hoping to find out if there was a way forward if the dell PSU didn't work out.

if warranty expires and you like to replace the psu then you would need to purchase from thirdparty or Dell parts.  It is a proprietary psu which is designed and made for Dell only.

Wait ... if the PSU is proprietary, how can you purchase from a third party?

Apologies, perhaps some more clarity would be useful, I had seen that on previous models people had found the relevant connectors to use aftermarket power supplies in their older XPS machines, I'm hoping that someone might have some insight as to how or what connectors would be required to use an off the shelf PSU in this machine.

There are no 'off the shelf' PSU's that will work in the XPS 8960 . . . hence the "Proprietary" characterization. You could purchase the Dell 1350 watt PSU and perhaps have better luck.

In the older XPS machines the PSU was standard ATX format.
