XPS 8940 Power Supply Replacement
I need to replace the power supply in my XPS 8940. It came with the 360W H360EBM-00 (2 x 6-pin, 2 x 4-pin), but these are rather expensive these days. Can I replace it with the 460W H460EBM-00 (8-pin, 2 x 6-pin, 2 x 4-pin)? It's more powerful and half the price. Thanks for your help!

Besides your stock 360w PSU, you can upgrade to 500w with the Dell part number (first 5 characters) indicated below:

no 8940 can only use 6+4+4 pin psu
the 460w 8+4+4 is for 8950. the Dell propreitary psu pinout are completely different.

this is confusing but does not need to be.
the new 460w psu for 8950 has white 8+4+4 pin. It has a characteristic logo on the psu housing
it has the new Dell proprietary form factor
dimensions= 185*120*62mm

The 460w psu for 8940 has white 6+4+4 pin. It is the older Dell TFX psu and does not have the logo (oval with three bars). dimensons = 220mm*82mm*62mm
the form factor is different from the newer psu for 8950.

@robdarst62 , yes, your linked power supply is Dell part Y7R0X and it is compatible with your XPS 8940. Note that each Dell part number in my reply is a link. Click on them and select matching part number on seller description and choose the seller whom offers better term of pricing, free shipping, free return, has multiple units for remedy issue.
