XPS 8940, overheating PM991a NVMe Samsung 512GB
Hi, I recently had a warning appear on screen from Intel Optane Memory and storage manager saying "One of your disks is at risk (SMART Event). Please open Optane memory and storage manager for more details".
When I do this, the status says normal. It doesn't find an issue. So, I installed Crystal Disc info which show the SSD is running hot intermittently, up to 79 degrees. The only symptoms I've noticed is that occasionally, maybe once a week, the system freezes for about 10 - 15 seconds, then unfreezes and works fine. I'm not sure what to do about this? Not sure what temperature is acceptable for the SSD? Whether a heatsink is available or not or whether is will cure the issue.
Any advice appreciated....thank you

NVMe SSD are rated to run up to 70° as normal operating temperature. At 79°, it is considered hot and may triggered performance throttling when reaching 80°. The performance should be resumed after the drive gets cool down.
There are many different options for solution. You can add a simple heatsink onto the SSD. If you are planning to upgrade to a larger capacity SSD, select one with built in heatsink. Or, you can move the SSD onto one of the PCIe slot using an adapter.

Tough one to answer. Yes, there are operating temperatures for the SSD, but there are 2, one in operation and another when not operating? Doesn't seem to make sense to me, but see https://www.quietpc.com/samsung-pm991-m2 and is shows "Operating 0°C to 70°C Non-Operating -40°C to 85°C " and I assume the last is the environment it is in when the PC is off.
Yes, it could be throttling, but you never got the high temp warning unless you look at the SMART event to be sure. It is on the bottom of the DiskInfo. Any are RED or Yellow?
Can also run in a Admin Command Prompt "wmic diskdrive get status" and see if all drives return OK.
If Crystal DiskInfo all items at the bottom showing 'blue' and the COMMAND above shows OK, you might be interested reading this, https://community.intel.com/t5/Intel-Optane-Memory/Wondering-about-how-serious-quot-disk-at-risk-SMART-event-quot/td-p/1469592https://community.intel.com/t5/Intel-Optane-Memory/Wondering-about-how-serious-quot-disk-at-risk-SMART-event-quot/td-p/1469592 and not worry about it or even disable the warning.
However, high running temps are not good for the overall health of the SSD. Did this just start? Have you been running high CPU demand programs/games?
Are you sure all your fans are running? The case of a possible 2 year old or more PC might have some 'dust bunnies' in and could use some cleaning with compressed air? That could be a reason for heat build up?

In the line of 70 is too high, do you have nvme air coolant installed ?
I used this one, in my micron 3500 in my 8950, the temp remains around 37
It's on amazon
