XPS 8940, clock like ticking noise

Hello, my new XPS 8940 (bought end Nov 2020) makes a constant ticking noise from boot up. The noise persist even when I'm not running any program and it sounds kind of like a clock ticking.

As it is constant the noise gets very annoying, is this normal? what could it be? I'm not really tech savvy and was wondering if any of you guys had a similar issue or could help solving this problem.

I've uploaded the video on youtube as I'm not sure how to properly describe the noise

Thank you very much

I have the same issue too. It doesn't happen all the time, but does occur frequently throughout the day and once it does it will do it for 5-10 minutes. Dell Tech Support was 0 help. This is the drive which I am only using for continuous backups, but if this is an indication of a future failure what good will the backup be. I am very concerned because this computer is less than a week old.

I have the same issue just like your description.

When I open excel or word, I can hear the ticking noise immediately however when I open pdf I can't hear that. Indeed, it only appears opening files in SSD not HDD.

I Hope Dell can help solve this.

Open a CMD window and run MSCONFIG. See if there are any Seagate applications running. I uninstalled the Seagate Dashboard program which gets rid of the possible 2 offending applications and stopped the chirping noise. Another option is discussed here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WM6kUBA03rw

I had this problem too. I solved it by running Disk Drill and checked my hard drives for lost partitions. It found one, fixed it, and the noise has stopped.

@dngibsons08

That program you proposed is a DATA RECOVERY program? Doesn't mention it as a Disk 'utility'?

Were you tying to recover data or just decide to run it?

It, like many other programs can find bad sectors, did you know you had any or were looking to see if you had some?

Oh, by the way, the date of the last entry is over 3 years ago. Your reply might not be of much use to the others in the thread.

Just curious why you were looking for 'this' problem, and decided to post here?
