XPS 8940, add one more ram

I have a XPS 8940, the default ram is single 8GB and I checked that it is Kingston 8GB in 1Rx16 and 3200AA.

I am planning to add one more Kingston 8GB ram.

Should I buy exact 1Rx16? What if I buy 1Rx8 so it will be mixing 1Rx8 and 1x16?

Thanks a lot.

The best solution is to purchase a 16 GB kit with matched RAM modules. That way you are certain of having compatible RAM modules. And the most compatible come from Crucial as shown here. But if you want to keep the original then  I would suggest matching the original module as closely as possible. If you mix them it may be fine but remember that Dell systems are very picky about RAM types.

check your system spec by using your service tag.  ram DP/N is either 9CXF2 or V0M5R.

the matching Kingston ram would be the following:

Kingston K9CXF2-MIB/K9CXF2-MIE  (for Dell 9CXF2)

Kingston KV0M5R-HYD/KV0M5R-MIE (for Dell V0M5R)

XPS8940

9CXF2 8GB DDR4, 3200MHz, 1Gx64, Unbuffered, 288 pin, Single Rank, 1.2V, Non-ECC, Non-Encrypted Adata AO2P32NC8W1-BD3SHC, Hynix HMAA1GU6CJR6N-XN, Kingston K9CXF2-MIB/K9CXF2-MIE, Micron MTA4ATF1G64AZ-3G2B1/MTA4ATF1G64AZ-3G2E1, Samsung M378A1G44AB0-CWE/M378A1G44BB0-CWE

V0M5R 8GB DDR4, 3200MHz, 1Gx64, 1RX8, Unbuffered, 288 pin, Single Rank, 1.2V, Non-ECC, Non-Encrypted, Adata AO2P32NC8T1-BZ5SHD, Hynix HMA81GU6CJR8N-XN/HMA81GU6DJR8N-XN, Kingston KV0M5R-HYD/KV0M5R-MIE, Micron MTA8ATF1G64AZ-3G2J1, Samsung M378A1K43EB2-CWE

Keep in mind that 1Rx8 and 1Rx16 are indicators of chip configs on RAM modules, not the storage capacity of the modules.

1Rx8 modules have a better internal configuration made up of four bank groups, whereas 1Rx16 modules only have two bank groups. Because of how memory controllers work, the x8 configuration can yield considerably higher bandwidths compared to the x16 configuration.

I wouldn't mix 1Rx8 and 1Rx16 modules. As it is, the XPS 8940 has unusual quirks about which slots to use when installing two different sets of pairs that aren't identical, even when the modules within a pair are matched.

And you may be better off getting a matched pair of 1Rx8 modules than adding another 1Rx16 to your existing OEM 1Rx16, even though the total storage capacity may be the same after the upgrade.

Re: does single 16gb ram run in the same speed as two 8gb ram?

no.  dual channel speed is slightly better than single channel.  but the difference may be minute so in practice it does not matter significantly.

Re: I checked that it is Kingston 8gb in 1Rx16 and 3200AA.

what is your Dell oem Kingston ram DP/N?  can you upload a pic of actual Dell ram?

there are two kinds of oem Kingston ram that Dell buys and validates.  also not sure if Kingston retail sells the same ram that they provide to Dell.  Just because Kingston says its ram is c/w 8940 does not necessarily mean it will run side by side with Dell ram.  For dual channel, the two rams need to be identical in spec.

Thanks for your reply. I checked on Kingston official website and it provided the types of ram which are compatible with XPS 8940.

May I know if the part number is correct? Thanks.

Thank you. But does single 16gb ram run in the same speed as two 8gb ram?

This is the default ram in my computer. So do I have to buy the same ram? Thanks.

safer to get same model number of Kingston.  Just saw this which seems good deal.  https://www.ebay.com/itm/125031292655?hash=item1d1c721eef:g:CnoAAOSwzIRhqP9W
