XPS 8930, using both onboard and discrete GPU

When you order a Dell XPS 8930 with a separate graphics card  (NVIDIA 1060, for example), can you run a second monitor from the onboard graphics port?  What I have in mind, is running a map program (like XC Soar) off of it while running the Condor Soaring program off of the NVIDIA card.

You can use an onboard Intel Graphics video port along with the add-in video card on the XPS 8930, as long as the first monitor is connected to the add-in card.

You might want to compare video performance between having both monitors connected to the add-in card vs one on the add-in and one on onboard Intel Graphics.

If  your add-in video card only has one HDMI port and your second monitor doesn't support any of the other ports on the video card, using the onboard HDMI port for that monitor would save you from having to buy an adapter for one of the ports on video card so it can support the second monitor.

No, not really.

You can run two programs at once already. You connect both monitors to the Nvidia GTX-1060.  If you want to make each program windows full-screen in each monitor, go for it.

Hi..

What about running linux as the host OS with windows in a VM.. Use the onboard graphics for linux and put the nvidia card on hardware passthrough to the vm..

Will this work?

It doesn't sweem to sit right with ahving to have the first monitor on the nvidia card.

Don't know if that would work or not, but what's the point? You'll probably eat up PC resources running Linux with Win 10 in a VM.

Why do you have issues with having the first monitor on the add-in video card? You can always remove the add-in card and run your primary monitor using onboard Intel HD Graphics if you that's what you want. You might even be able to connect 2 monitors to the onboard video...

In ancient times (~5 years ago), you couldn't even use onboard video at all if an add-in card was installed. So having the capability of using onboard when at least one monitor is connected to the add-in card is a major improvement from Intel.

An add-in card gives better performance and better resolution than onboard video. Onboard video shares system memory whereas modern add-in video cards have gigabytes of their own RAM  so they use less system RAM. And video card RAM is typically faster than system RAM too...

I have a use-case for it and need this to work. I am shipping back my xps8930 as Intel Multi Display in the bios is not accessible.

There is no Intel Multi Display option listed in BIOS setup for the XPS 8930, according to the Service Manual. That was an option on some PCs with older generation CPUs, but not with newer generations like the 9th Gen CPU in the XPS 8930.

Onboard Intel HD Graphics should be available on the XPS 8930, as long as at least one monitor is connected to the add-in video card.

If you only want to use onboard Intel HD Graphics, pull out the add-in video card...

Hi @RoHe ,

I just asked another question that's related in a new topic, but your answer here was very close to what I want to accomplish.  You mentioned that with the more recent Dell XPS desktops, one could use both integrated and discrete graphics without any BIOS changes so this original poster could use two monitors, one on each.  I already have four on the discrete (NVIDIA 1070), but my fifth one connected to the integrated is showing in Device Manager and Display Settings but will not show content.  Is there a hard limit in OS somewhere that limits it to four displays max across both cards?

@Pr0teus  XPS 8930 doesn't have a Multi-Display option in BIOS like some recent models which would have to be enabled to use both add-in and onboard video ports at same time.

Version of Windows?

Since #5 is showing in Device Manager and in Display Settings, Windows is seeing it. So this may be an issue with the monitor.

Which onboard Intel Graphics port are you using on XPS 8930, DP or HDMI, and which port on monitor #5?

Are you using an adapter cable to change one port type to another for #5?

If  #5 has its own On-Screen Display (OSD) that's accessed by pressing a button(s) on the monitor, have you opened the OSD and made sure the monitor is set to receive the type of video signal the onboard video port is sending to it?

Have you tried swapping #5 with one of the four currently connected to the video card (using only 4 monitors total) to make sure #5 works ?

Have you tried using one of the four currently connected to the video  card to the same onboard video port (still using only 4 monitors total), to make sure the onboard port is working correctly?

And please don't double post...

Hi @RoHe ,

Yeah, sorry about that... I saw this thread right after I posted my question (after searching for any related topics and not finding any).  To keep it simple, how about I cut and paste your questions and answer them there... Thanks for your effort to help resolve my concern.

For future reference, my question is at following link:
