XPS 8930 Upgrade to 1 TB NVMe

OK Here is the story, I purchased a 1 TB WD WDBRPG10010BNC. I believe that is the correct model number. Anyway, here is what I did. I cloned the 256 NVMe to a 500 GB SATA drive then cloned the 500 GB to the 1 TB NVMe. I do not have a USB Enclosure for the NVMe so I had to do it that way a reinstall is out of the question.

But my issue is Device Manager sees the 1 TB HDD that is Labeled XPS DATA. That 1 TB came preinstalled from Dell along with the original 256 GB NVMe. Now when I open the This PC Icon, I see no XPS DATA D drive. This is because of a raid driver with the new 1 TB NVMe I believe. I have yet to figure out why Dell configures their systems in raid makes no sense to me at all also same with McAfee but that's another story.

Anyway, here are some screenshots that may help. And please Dell Bot's do not PM me asking for my service tag and then tell me it's out of warranty. And before anyone ask no this is not Windows 7. It's just a Windows 7 taskbar and start menu.

OK After a Windows Update for Windows Defender and a required reboot the drive now shows.

I still have a concern.

Can I undo the RAID without reinstalling Windows? What RAID does Dell use?

Also the screenshot above the one with the partitions it shows Disk 2 has a 128 MB Partition named Other. Why is that there?

@CTG_8273 Can you run Disk Management and post the results? If the 1 TB HDD was always your data drive I don't know why there is a 128 MB partition, but it could be the reason you don't see the drive in This PC. You could try to delete the 128 MB partition, but be sure your data is backed up or if your data is backed up you could reinitialize the HDD, create one partition, format it, and then restore your data.

You can switch SATA operation from RAID to AHCI without reinstalling Windows. The procedure is to switch the Windows installation with the following procedure: http://triplescomputers.com/blog/uncategorized/solution-switch-windows-10-from-raidide-to-ahci-operation/

Note that the BIOS change is not made until step 4 of the procedure. I would disconnect the 1 RB HDD when you run the procedure, but before you run the procedure I would try to resolve the issue with not being able to see the 1 TB HDD in This PC first.

In the future, instead of double cloning, I recommend using Macrium Reflect Free Edition to image separately each of the partitions of the old boot drive to the HDD, then restoring the partitions to the new SSD one at a time in the same order and expanding the OS partition when you restore it.

@Vic384

Thanks for your reply I have copied all the data off the 1 TB to the extra 500 GB SSD I have. I am going to use the 500 GB SSD for storage. I am migrating away from HDD they just fail too quick. And I am puzzled why the 1 TB has that 128 MB partition. I used to have a 4 TB as storage but that was way too much, and I cloned the 4 TB to the 1 TB. And I just copied everything to the 500 GB SSD for storage. I will look at the 4 TB it still has the DATA. I want to see if it has the 128 MB partition, neither it nor the 1 TB has ever been the boot drive, But I am done with HDD'S it's going to be all SSDs for me.

This system also stays on the Dell logo with the spinning dots for longer than it should. That started after a Windows Update back before Christmas.

@CTG_8273 If it stays on the spinning circles for too long check the following:

1. Have all the Windows updates completed installing and there are no failed updates?

2. From a Command Prompt (Run as administrator) run the following:

DISM.exe /Online/Cleanup-Image/Restorehealth

sfc /scannow

3. In Task Manager, Startup tab, right-click and Disable the High and Medium Startup impact apps

4. Google search 'windows 10 spinning circle long time' for additional things to try.
