XPS 8930, SD card reader, missing

I got this XPS 8930 i7-9700 several months ago and have not experienced any issues until my SD Card reader writer quit working and now has disappeared.  This is Windows 10 with Dell Support Assistant and available Windows updates applied.  I had about six SD cards I needed to review and had no issues looking at them last week.  A couple of days later I tried to read a card and Windows never saw the card being inserted to prompt me for action nor did explorer assign a drive letter for access to the card.  I tried several cards and none were seen, even though they work in other devices and PC's. I ran diagnostics and no problems were detected.  Then I started a call with Dell technical support and I was asked to do pre-boot diagnostics and no issues detected, Support Assist would allow specific test on reader, but device was not found.  Then a couple of reboots later by remote support and the hardware completely disappeared from Device Manager (which did not indicate an issue) and support asst no longer showed it as a testable device.  Bottom line of support call was to do a system restore back to some time when I could read cards.  This failed until I booted into a special recovery mode, but the system restore did not help with the problem.  I re-ran the pre-boot diagnostics and went into the detailed pages and could see where the sd card reader cable was recognized as good.  I saw one post where someone was doing a case swap and it noted if the cable for SD Card reader was not connected it would cause a bios boot error notification.  That error is not present so I assume the cable is seen.  This issue with the device not showing in device manager is I can't even try updated drivers. I have also tried downgrading the bios, updating, applying the intel chipset drivers from the support page for the system and nothing is bringing it back.  I can read these cards in other systems and my little sandisk USB adapter worked to let me access a card I needed to read.  Next, I am supposed to be sending it back for system board replacement, but would like to avoid that if at all possible.

I also tried to boot a few Linux distros like Ubuntu, Mint, and MX, but they were not liked the system enough to get through the Linux boot process.  My hope was that Linux would see the card reader so I could confirm it is a Windows problem not a hardware problem.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Motherboard replacement fixed the card reader issue.

In addition to this thread, you can read my experience getting this issue fixed here on my blog.  If the Dell repair tech in Houston had done what I was told would be done (motherboard replacement), this issue would have been solved without upgrading my warranty to onsite and having to get another technician to come out and do what was supposed to be done when it was sent in for repair initially.  Dell could have done much better and still garner a F for customer service apart from the contracted technician that visited me today.  He has been the one bright spot in all of this.

unplug the reader cable and reboot 2 times

Then scan in device manager for new devices.

Then WHILE POWERED ON plug in the reader cable and scan for new devices again.

Then what happens?

What I mean is DISCONNECT 2 and 3 aka front USB cables. Might also be connection 9 but Im not sure cuz I dont have an 8930.

Reader is USBReader is USB

Card readers are USB devices so look in Device Manager to see if there's any "unknown" (USB) device listed. If you see an 'unknown", right-click and uninstall it.

Reboot, open Device Manager and "scan for hardware changes". See if it gets found now...

Thanks for the response.  I disconnected the cable from the MB and rebooted twice and the bios reported a failing I/O component on both boots.  After second boot, plugged the cable back in, but nothing new or unknown located in device manager. Rebooted again; no change.  I was able to use Kali Linux to boot and here are the outputs from lsusb, lspci annd lshw.  Not sure that anything is showing up as a reader.  According t support the card reader device is part of the Intel chipset.

Thanks again for all of the suggestions.  I thought I posted this reply already, but I don't see it.  I tried unplugging the cable from connector 10 and rebooting.  The bios gave an error on I/O failure about the device probably starting to fail as it could not see the cable plugged in on both reboots.  After second reboot, plugged card reader cable back into connector 10, but no new devices show in device manager and the card reader still doesn't detect the presence of a known good card.  I was able to boot Kali Linux and do a lsusb and lspci, but I am not sure anything showing is representative of a card reader.  I also posted the super long results of a lshw command, but that may be why my previous reply doesn't show as it could have made the message too long.  Here are the usb and pci outputs.  Thanks again for the suggestions.  Tim

Not sure where my replies are going, but all of the suggestions have been tried and the reader is still MIA.

I made two previous replies and included the output from the Linux lsusb and pspci commands, but left them off this reply as the Dell overlords may not like them hence why my two previous replies have never shown up.

Regardless of OS it should show up in BIOS and the EPS tests.

If cmos battery is bad it may be disabled in bios.

But you have to discharge power and disconnect the reader to reset it.

A failed SD card reader?

Maybe you can get Tech Support to send you a replacement card reader...

I have the same problem in my XPS 8930.  I believe the card reader disappeared when I updated the bios from 1.1.04 to 1.1.13.  Card reader is detected in bios as failing when unplugged. Unplugging USB cables does not fix.  Latest chipset driver A09 (06/15/20) does not fix.

@edinaz40

I have XPS 8930 with an i7-9700 and BIOS A13. "Multiple Card Reader USB Device" is listed in Device Manager on my system under Disk Drives.

I see two "Mass storage devices" listed under USB. One is my external USB HDD and the other probably is the card reader, but I don't know which is which.

When I insert a 4 GB SanDisk SD card into the card reader, it gets assigned a drive letter but it doesn't give the usual USB connect/disconnect chimes that a regular USB stick does. And the SD card doesn't appear on the list when I click the USB "Safely Remove" icon.

I can read/write to the card with no problems...

EDIT: I have a desktop shortcut for the card reader and if I double-click it when there's no card in the reader, a message pops up saying "Please insert a disk into removable disk E" (where E is the assigned drive letter).

"Multiple Card Reader USB Device" is NOT listed in Device Manager on my system under Disk Drives.

There are two "USB Composite Device" entries under "Universal Serial Bus controllers". The first one is my Logitec USB Camera. I think the second one is probably the card reader which indicates it is working properly. I tried updating the driver with no luck (Best driver already installed).
