XPS 8930, SA, CPU fan failed to respond correctly

XPS 8930 motherboard shows on SA (SupportAssistprior to booting up that "the (CPU fan) failed to respond correctly" Error code 2000-0511 validation 84543. Then allow me to continue and then shows

>>Checking media presence......

>>Media present......

>>Strat PXE over IPv4, Press ESC key to abort PXE boot.

Then I hit ESC and Windows 10 Pro starts normally. After that the motherboard works correctly. I have run the SA troubleshooting and it does not detect any fan issues. I have replaced the fan without success. Sequence starts every time I start or restart the computer. I have pics but this will not allow them to be posted.

@RoHe   @Russ325

Error Code 2000-0511 (Processor Fan) IS VERY SPECIFIC.

Non  DELL fans will have that error due to wiring issue OR too low RPM.   22 processor-fan connector (CPU_FAN)

I own this model and I can reproduce the exact error from bios support assist.  The error is very specific and not related to hard drive or os etc.  You can remove all storage devices and it will still show up on the screen.

If the fan is the correct one and IF Its plugged into the correct header and IF the fan is good it will work.

Thank you for all your help with my issue.. It looks like the board is fine. I NEED TO FIND A CHASSIS TO PUT IT INTO THAT WILL PROBABLY SOLVE ALL MY EXISTING ISSUES. ONE LAST QUESTION IS THERE ANY WAY TO SHUT OFF THE SUPPORTASSIST IN THE BIOS? I HAVE SHUT OFF EVERYTHING THAT HAD TO DO WITH SUPPORTASSIST AS YOU CAN SEE IN THE PHOTOS I SENT.

Sounds like you may have a BIOS settings issue if it's trying (and failing) to boot from IPv4.

First thing I would do if this was my XPS 8930, is replace the motherboard battery and clear BIOS:

  1. Reboot and start tapping F2 when you see the Dell splash screen to open BIOS setup
  2. Copy down all current BIOS settings, to be safe
  3. Power off, unplug
  4. Press/hold power button for ~15 sec
  5. Open case and remove motherboard battery (check Service Manual for details)
  6. Press/hold power button for ~30 sec
  7. Install fresh CR2032 3-volt coin cell battery (~$2)
  8. Close up and connect mouse, monitor and keyboard
  9. Reboot and start tapping F2 to open BIOS setup again
  10. Navigate using Arrow, Tab and Enter keys to find the Boot Option Priorities
  11. Make sure Windows Boot Manager is first on the list
  12. Disable options to boot from IPv4 and IPv6
  13. Don't change anything else in BIOS setup, but save the Boot Option changes and exit setup. PC will boot itself automatically

Resetting BIOS may also clear the fan error, but suggest you keep an eye on temps with free software like Speccy or HWMonitor.  Nice thing about Speccy is you can configure it to show an icon in the taskbar notification area with one temp (eg, CPU) all the time, and mousing over the icon shows temps for HDD, GPU etc in popup bubble.

Let us know if this solves the problem...

BTW: You should be able post images by clicking the camera icon on the toolbar and dragging/dropping the file(s) into the image box. Images have to be relatively small files in an acceptable file format (eg, .jpg).  We won't see them until after a moderator approved, even though you may be able to see them in your post.

I have reset the Bios they are revision 1.1.16 and changed the battery. Now when I start the board I get Supportassist hardware testing screen   after about 2 minutes the Dell SupportAsist has a defect screen comes up indicating the fan fails Error code 2000-0511 validation 84543. The fan has been replaced and is new. If I hit the "continue" on the Support Assis fan failure screen the board starts normally. If I restart the board goes through the same SupportAssist Fan Faailed sequence.

We won't see the 2 images you posted until a moderator approves them. So in meanwhile, tell us what they show.

Are you still getting the PXE IPv4 error after clearing BIOS and replacing the battery? Did you confirm that Windows Boot Manager is first boot option after clearing BIOS and deleting the IPv4 and IPv6 boot options?

BTW: How is SATA Operation set in BIOS? Dell usually installs Win 10 with BIOS set to RAID, but the default is AHCI. When you cleared BIOS, it would have reverted to AHCI but Win 10 can't boot in AHCI mode if it was originally installed with SATA Operation set to RAID. So check that setting and change if necessary.

What replacement fan did you install? If you didn't install a Dell OEM CPU fan, you'll always get that fan error message. Dell OEM fans have to be read by BIOS and a non-Dell fan isn't wired for that so the error persists, even though it's a new fan.

And it could be a motherboard issue. You'll have to decide whether to use F1 at every boot and keep an eye on CPU temps or replace the motherboard. If PC is still under warranty, contact Dell Tech Support for assistance.

Hi No longer getting the PXE since I did a clean install of Win 10 Pro and cleared the bios as you suggested.

On my Last post...

If I restart the board goes through the same SupportAssist Fan Failed sequence.

The fan is a OEM Replacement D/PN 01D40R

Double-check that the CPU fan is correctly/securely plugged into its motherboard header.

Assuming the replacement fan isn't bad, it sound like the motherboard isn't detecting the fan properly.  Reboot and start tapping F12 when you see the Dell splash screen to open the F12 menu. Select the Diagnostics option, and then see if there's an individual fan test option (but you might have to run all of them to get the fan tested), and see what it says.

You could try disabling the SupportAssist OS Recovery option in BIOS to see if that stops the fan errors and lets you boot directly. And if not, try also disabling the Auto OS Recovery Threshold in BIOS.

Even though the PC will boot after the fan error, I suggest you keep a close eye on CPU temps using one of the free software apps I linked above or other app you choose, especially when CPU is under load. You won't want to risk frying the CPU if the fan isn't working properly.

And if PC is under warranty, contact Dell Tech Support...

Post back and let us know about the fan tests and if disabling one/both of those BIOS options stops the fan error reports.

I will try to get the fan you selected, I have tried to get the DVH85 but nothing comes up. Accprding to the pic you submitted the fan is a AVC DS08025R12U which I can find is the AVC fan I have listed correct per the pic you supplied?

The picture I showed is an example not the exact model.

@DELL-Chris M  would have more information.

AVC DS08025R12U is not a Dell part number.

I found it first try. The part on amazon is 400 percent over priced.
