XPS 8930, PSU and video card upgrades

XPS 8930

XPS 8930

I have this XPS 8930, and I am interested in upgrading my graphics card, and probably my PSU. I am not very tech savvy, so I would appreciate any suggestions for decent but not difficult updates.

What gpu do you have now?

For the coffee lake cpu, best mid range and high end gpu are gtx 1070, gtx 1080.  This will give great 1080p fps.  price for these good gpu are coming down and they are more affordable than the newest RTX 3000 series gpu.  other considerations are poor air flow in 8930 case, so it is better to choose a gpu with TDP no more than 200w.  you really do not want to install a 300-350w gpu inside 8930 case to have it baked.

The Dell top oem card rtx 2070 for XPS 8930 is too fast for i3-8100 or i5-8400 which causes -10% bottleneck.  rtx 2070 needs a cpu upgrade to i7-8700 for a good match.  If you want to game at 4k ultra settings then you need minimum i7-8700 + rtx 2080.

If you have a 460w stock psu now, it is good enough for gtx 1080 and rtx 2070.  It is still good for rtx 2080, Recommended PSU Wattage: 447 W.

Dell oem gpu validated for 8930

The PSU is standard ATX format and easy to change. Consider a fully modular PSU that is 140mm - 150mm long. Any longer will eat into your cable management area.

@Ted01220  - The XPS 8930 fully supports all 9th Gen CPUs, eg, i7-9700, so if you decide to upgrade the CPU, you may want a 9th Gen upgrade rather than an 8th Gen , depending on budget, etc...

sorry about that, current gpu ,  DELL SE2719H on NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, it's a good card, but can't play the games I like on ultra, I get stuttering when I try

If you play at 1080p, upgrade to gtx 1080.  you can keep using the i3-8100 cpu. one more tip: choose blower style gpu than open air due to poor air flow in 8930 case.

if you want 4k, then a faster gpu and faster cpu are both needed.

@Ted01220 - You said "Core i3 8100". The means its an 8th Generation CPU.

My XPS 8930 came with factory-installed Core i7-9700, which is a 9th Generation CPU.

NOTE: XPS 8930 specs only lists 8th Gen CPUs because that's what was available when this model was originally released.  Dell eventually starting installing 9th Gen CPUs, but never updated the specs doc.

XPS8930 was first released in October 2017, original stock 8th gen.

9th gen i9-9900k or i7-9700k was released 1 year later in October 2018.

Early 8930 bios 1.01-1.013 (up to Aug 2018) did not support 9th gen. In Nov 2018 bios update 1.1.3, Enhancements:

- Enhanced to support Intel i9-9900K, i7-9700K and i5-9600K processors.

I have an XPS 8930 desktop computer with the following specs:
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8700 CPU @ 3.20GHz   3.19 GHz
Installed RAM 32.0 GB (31.8 GB usable)
Device ID 35410E37-DEB1-4BE3-8EEA-B1C48A93962C
Product ID 00325-95834-52901-AAOEM
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

What is a good NVIDIA GPU that would fit in a single slot and support CUDA so that

I can get at least an 8x speed up on RC-Astro AI-based programs (used in PixInsight, if you know what that is)?

My Vostra 15 7510 laptop came with a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 TI Laptop GPU and that gives a CUDA speed up of ~8x on these signal processing programs.  I'd like to purchase the analogous capability for my XPS 8030 desktop computer.  I believe the mother board only supports single slot add-ons, but am not sure.

NVIDIA support said that I need to ask this question on the Dell Forum, not the NVIDIA forum.

Thanks.
