The keyboard error alert vanished when I removed the HDMI cable. I attached a DVI-VGA cable from the XPS 8900 to a VGA monitor, & found the pc to be running normally, bar that I am locked out for 2 hours again, due to the keyboard alert warning, which prevents the pc from fully booting.
I asked earlier if this was a monitor problem & received no reply.
Are you saying it was ok for a few days, but the same problem has come back?
Are you using a switch to choose which of the two PCs in the pic, monitor and keyboard are supposed to be connected to? In this case, try connecting keyboard directly to XPS 8900 and see if that makes any difference. Or at the least, check/reseat all connections in your entire setup...
Have you tried a different keyboard? And/or a different rear USB2 port on XPS 8900?
To recap, I unplugged all monitors, keyboard and mouse. I restarted my computer and once on I plugged in one monitor at a time and the vga one worked, the hdmi monitor did not. Thank you.

XPS 8900 cannot boot - gives keyboard warning alert - picture added - what does this mean please?
I have been using a HDMI splitter for dual screens, I suspect this may be the problem.
But now the XPS has disabled log-in due to repeated boot-fails.
There is nothing wrong with the keyboard after the pc boots, but it hangs on restart - flashing the warning message.

Apologies. This forum prevented me posting for 40 minutes - hence the fragmented post I am now submitting.

On some system, one can check BIOS settings and disable the feature "system halt on keyboard error".
Refer to service manual and replace the coin cell battery due to its age.
https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-us/xps-8900-desktop/xps-8900-desktop/procedure?guid=guid-4b661fd9-ad4f-4e64-829e-81daa54773b5&lang=en-us
Use a good working computer to change or reset your password. If you can not reset your log in password, you may have to consider a clean installation.

Thank you.
So, re: "system halt on keyboard error" - is there anything wrong with my keyboard, please?

Battery, at length, replaced - no change - same keyboard warning.
Note: when monitor is unplugged from pc, then re-plugged, error message vanishes & desktop graphic resumes, plus the 2 hour lock.
At the expiry of the 2 hour period, the pc is fully usable, & functions as normal.
Dell diagnostics have been run on the 8900 with a pass on every category.
BIOS was flashed by the diagnostic, all went smoothly.
Please advise.

It's day 3 now &
A-OK
This was a monitor-pc issue (see above)
The XPS was put back into it's original location & connected to an HDMI screen / monitor.
It took the XPS something like 10 minutes to recognise the monitor.
Suddenly, the screen came alive - been ok ever since.
No hangs, no error messages.
Posting this - in the hope it may help anyone else who gets that Dell error pop-up.

My XPS 8900 hangs on boot / restart, with the attached alert message.
When the monitor plug is removed,
then replaced from the back of the pc, the error message disappears, & the pc starts as normal.
Advice please.
Thank you.
