XPS 8700, S3423DWC, HDMI no sound

I have recently bought a Dell Monitor S3423DWC but can not get any sound from it when connected to my PC (a Dell XPS 8700) via an HDMI cable. When I connect a laptop to the monitor via USB-C I do get sound. I have updated my sound drivers, I have istalled Dell assistant, diagnostics apps etc and still no sound. When I go to the sound controls on the desktop it shows no audio devices. If I connect headphones to the desktop they work. Any ideas?

Audio playback from HDMI would require proper audio driver for graphics card be installed.  If using AMD Radeon card, make sure that AMD audio driver is installed.  If using NVIDIA, make sure that NVIDIA audio is installed.  If using integrated graphics, make sure that Intel audio is installed.  You can verify the audio drivers in Device Manager.  Once you have complete verification that audio drivers are properly installed, select monitor audio as output device.

In system tray, select audio volume icon, then select sound output.  Any selection with HDMI or monitor name in description will be the speakers from the monitor.  Select it and adjust volume to proper audible level and you should hear audio from the monitor.
